Thanks...when I saw the coin had no problems, and I heard the price...it was an instant sale.
Did you notice the centering punch on the obverse? And one at 3, 6, and 9:00.

My word, $25 is a steal for such a coin. Congratulations again! Always nice to make such finds.

There were three different types of 2 skilling 1687 made. This is the easiest, in fact, but also the oldest - same design as the 1686 one.

10xloupe, that is not up to date prices. $60 for a VF? You'd be hard pressed to get a VG for that amount - at least hereabouts. Overseas it appears to be possible.

Krause is somewhat inaccurate for world coins that have their own collector markets. They're off on Australia prices too
Google translate will help with the Norwegian. And for grades, my Siegs catalog translates the grades to:
0 = UNC, 01 = EF, 1+ = VF, 1 = F, 1+ = VG, 2 = G, 3 = Poor

A slight typo there, DVCollector. VG translates to 1-.

I might add that the Nordic standard is somewhat stricter than this translation suggests. I have bought a large amount of VF coins worldwide, and only the best of them rate an 1+ in Norway. 1/1+ is more common. Likewise, a clear EF is rarely as good as a 01, we tend to have to move into AU territory for that. Our 0 is MS64 or better, MS 60-63 will generally be referred to as 0/01. Gold coins is an exeption. Even MS65 is most often thought of as a 0/01 there.

I found a couple of these coins in an auction, and while one looks fairly similar, I notice the lion on the reverse is a different style--especially the head. Perhaps my coins is the common type?

DVCollector,there are three different main types of the 1687 2 skilling. You have here showed us two of them. The third resembles the second but has "1687" beneath a smaller monogramme. Your type with the "5" as opposed to a roman "V" is the most frequent one, that is correct.

In addition to the main types there are lots of smaller varieties, which is the case for basically every coin from the period. Some Norwegian collectors try to get all of them, at least for their favourite coins. Myself I have until now only tried to get one of each. That is difficult enough

Thanks Litotes for all the information. I have not yet seen an example of the date below the monogramme, but I'll keep looking.
In a way, I'm fortunate to have the commonest variety, because I will find more examples to compare against the lion on mine. If this lion only appeared on one reverse die, I'll be pretty happy!
