Definitely look for premium examples. Don't trust the seller's grade, it's usually over-graded. Look for examples with good strikes, particularly on the reverse. Make sure all the lettering on the periphery is fully formed, and that the center and lower part of the fasces is fully struck. And above all, BEWARE of cleaned coins.

If you like proof coins don't shy away from them. I have seen PF 66 NGC graded Mercury's selling for under $170. I have been looking for a proof to add to my collection.

ya some are pretty reasonable, I just want to make the best decision now for the long run, I want to buy as much as I can now while the prices are still cheap (kinda)

I admire the proof merc's on ebay and where I see them. I am looking into some proof Franklins at this moment. there seems to be some good deals between dates 50-56 in like proof 66 or so. I bought some proof kenedy's back in the early 90's dates like 71-s, 76-s and a few others. Didn't pay much like 3-5 times face value. I tried to sell them the other day and I was offered face value. I said NOPE! So I still have them for the time being.

I guess it depends on the collector, some would pay for face value and some a little more, I have a nice proof Franklin half dollar in a proof set, I don't think its proof66 though

I to enjoy a proof Franklin, especially cameo pieces. My goal is a complete 14 coin set in proof cameo 66 or better.

I agree with the Captain, look for any Mercury dimes below the thirties in XF-AU grades. A 1921 plus the D ones in XF in original surface can be easily $400-$500, but would be hard to find like all Ag conditions. I am looking for it myself, but with the 5 sets of 25th Anniversary silver coins I bought. I will sell at least 4 and used the profits to pick up what I really wanted. Thank goodness for the Mint.

I have six of the graded Francklin's, most of the rest are pretty pricey. Back to the original topic of 1921 d dimes here is the one I got for melt back in the 80's

I know other people aren't a fan, but I really like that dark "circulated cameo" look that old silver coins get. Most of the Mercury dimes I find while roll hunting are that color, so any time I see a F or VF coin that isn't dark in the recesses I suspect it's been tampered with.
