I'm of the opinion that along with Colonials, they are definitely the most FUN! They're awesome! Really interesting pieces of history, all with their own unique character.
Yes, they are expensive, but that's what makes finding killer deals and showing them off so enjoyable!
Are you going for any kind of grade set, or price set?
Best of luck to you, Carl. =) I've got some scroppers I could part with, so let me know if theres anything you need. =)
I have a feeling once you really get into it, you'll find it's pretty enjoyable. Of course, as with any hobby, the best part of collecting large cents is the people you meet!

VERM - there's a guy on ebay from Florida (okay, that doesn't narrow it down) but he's had a few low grade '99's... let me find his name for ya. =)

Odd you should mention the people you meet. As I mentioned earlier, at a coin show the dealer I purchased some from was so knowledgeable about the Large Cent. He really talked my ear off about them. One of the most talkative dealers I've ever met at coin shows. Most will talk to you but few will almost not let you get away as this guy did once he found out I was interested in his favorite coin. With several coin shows in my area per month, numerous coin stores, I'm sure I could eventually find a great amount of these but those prices are scarry. When you consider most other collections, such as Mercury dimes or Lincoln Cents, there are so many a person can get for a few dollars. BUT with the Large Cent, all are rather expensive. Wonder what it would be like to have a complete date set all in MS grades.

I stuck with the Dansco 7099 album. Still pretty tough, and I don't have any of the 1793s (Conder, I'm totally jealous!). If it's not ruining the OP's original thread (if it is, please email me and I'll cease & desist!), here's a link to my Photobucket Large Cent collection: http://s777.photobucket.com/albums/...rge%20Cents/

Wow Moe, quite impressive I agree with delaner, old big copper has a uniqueness all it's own. Every piece has it's own character which I find very attractive.

Quote: Could easily go blind trying to figure out some of the differences in many of them. Amd as that one dealer pointed out, sometimes the obverse is the same but the reverse is different. And just noticed my 1807 has the reverse 180 degrees rotated. This is going to be a real challange. All I can afford are those "go blind" pieces. For me the fum is rising to the attribution challenge. And for your rotated reverse 1807, try S-276. About 80% of them come with the 180 degree rotation.

Moe . . the 1846 is a beaut. But they are all nice - a lot of history there.

There goes Moe showing off again:p
Just kidding, great collection! I'm having a hard time scrapping up enough money to get them for my 7099.

Carl, I subscribe to the date set for Large Cents. I have had several dealers tell me that chasing the varieties is very challenging and even more expensive. Doing attributions on worn LC's takes a lot of effort, but it is worth it. As a EAC member I have benefited from other members knowledge, including their books. You might want to look in to EAC membership, you can get nice discounts on the essential research books you'll need for attributing your collection.

All sounds interesting but also sounds like to much for me to really get into at my age, which is really old. Also, due to having well over 100 Albums to constantly upgrade, the entire mess is getting out of control. This latest venture for the Large Cent may be a little on the rough side now. As I mentioned, almost any collection people try for usually have some or many coins that are reasonable in price. However, it appears Large Cents start in prices where other collections leave off. For now I'll just try for a date set and not even wonder about all the possible varieties or types or whatever. I'm sure glad these things don't have Mint Marks too.
