I think you got a good deal on that Half Cent. It's got a nice strike and looks original. I'd grade it at F12. The surfaces look nice and smooth and this coin has great eye appeal. If I collected these, I would have been willing to go to $120 or so to add it to my collection, so I think you did very well.

I had to edit out your offer to trade because it is in the wrong section. Please post it in the B/S/T section, though. You'll probably get some interest pretty quickly. I also edited the title of this thread so that our members will see that there is now also a Half Cent being discussed.

I was wondering who it was that sniped me at the last minute on that Half Cent. Now I know.

oooops ... sorry about that cheif

there are a lot more nice ones out there if you look.

Honestly ...... if you bid on anything on ebay ...there is only one way..

to snipe.....it offers you the lowest price or you lose it to an overbidder willing to pay more than you think the coin is worth,

Keep looking

peace

PS I dind't win it in the last minute, I won it in the last 5 seconds.

Thanks again Susan .. I really liked the look of the coin. Being a photographer...I really look for coins with great eye appeal.

Here's other one of the three I bought that I thought had great eye appeal for a type book. 3 cent silver (cleaned?)

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...37&rd=1&rd=1

I have stopped looking at ebay for type coins as I'm kinda out of control right now,

thanks again

The coin went cheap. I guess you might have to see it in-hand to see how harshly cleaned it is. Most buyers, myself included, have been burned too many times by cleaned coins that have low resale value and steer clear of material like this. You'll have to tell us what you think when you get it. Personally, I typically only buy "crusty" coins that look like they've never been messed with and have a nice dove gray (for silver coins) look with some dirt in the crevices.

Errorcoins, please go back and re-read Prethen's post. Although there are times that it can not be avoided (mainly because of population restrictions and cost), buying problem coins can get you in trouble. There is a reason that Trade dollar went so cheap, and when a seller starts off on ebay with a whole blurb about how all coins have most likely been cleaned..........

This coin doesn't quite sit right with me. It looks like it was improperly cleaned. Notice the dirt in the areas where they couldn't get to? The rim hit at about 7 o'clock on the obverse doesn't look too bad, but the overall look is a bit too whitish. Perhaps there's a ton of luster on the coin. There's one BIG tip-off to a problem though. The seller sounds like an idiot when he says that he can't detect all cleaned coins. Sure, that can be a problem where coins have been lightly cleaned a long time ago and have nicely retoned, but overall any decent numismatist can tell if a coin has been cleaned. This is just his way to make an excuse to sell problem coins and appear to be guilt free.

By the way, notice how his return policy protects him from losing any money and allows him to keep 10% of yours as a penalty for being able to look at the coin?

Errorcoins, your enthusiasm is great. Please, don't let us squelch that for you. You have to be careful. Most of us, if not all of us experienced buyers, have been hurt with purchases we thought were good only find out we bought problems where the value was considerably less than we paid. True, these coins shouldn't normally be thought of as an investment, but you want to make sure you're buying right to have some sort of solid value built into your purchase in case you need to resell sooner than you think. If you like to see some original looking, problem-free (and/or "market-acceptable" type) coins, let us know what you'd like to see. I have a TON of coin scans from my personal collection I can share. I prefer to collect raw, circulated coins (other than the early proofs that are all in certified holders) and I try to image most of them. ebay attracts a lot of unknowledgeable buyers and there's a lot of junk on there. You have to tread a lot more carefully on there.

One more thing...

Just to give you some perspective, I recently won an item on ebay that has a perfectly good picture but I'm nervous nonetheless. Check out this thread....http:// (046) Not Allowed - Auto-Removed &threadid=560661.

Prethen, thank you for the info and input. My main collection is error coins and 99.9 % have never been cleaned so it's not been a problem.

As for these coin for the type set, well I'm just looking to get good examples of coins. Some of the 140 to 200 year old coins, I can accept a small amount of cleaning.

A nice bu Trade dollar is about 500 bucks and this cleaned au58 certified coin was 200. I would think I could resell it for at leaast the same amount if I had to.

I think I can live with the coin, but I don't have it in hand yet to make that judgement.

Thanks again

Hey Error,
For what it is worth, I was in Laurel, De. at an auction about a month ago and there was an 1876 (I believe) Trade dollar in ef-40 condition. Anyway,it had obviously been run thru my mothers Maytag. It went over $400 with a 15 percent buyers fee to boot. Place was full of collectors and dealers and there was a whole lot of bidding going on. Heck yes, it would have been nice if it was natural but the cleaning sure did not hurt it. Enjoy your coin. When you are ready to sell, send it to Delaware and reap the profit. I also believe that ebay and the like is expanding the number of new collectors exponentially and supply and demand is making coins we would turn our nose at previously valuable.

When you jump in, you jump with both feet!!

I know the retorike about not buying problem coins, but.....when I can buy a lightly cleaned coin at a discount, I will do it every time. Having said that, I hate harshly cleaned coins....But lightly cleaned and retoned....I'm there. I feel like I get more meat on the coin that way. What fun is it to have a 7070 and not having any details on the coins.

Errorcoins,
All those coins look very nice. But dang, you sure like to spend a lot. I would think if you sold those coins and had them end on a Saturday or Sunday I bet you would get your money back and possibly more...
Good things,

I go nuts when I get something new, like the 7070 Album. That's the main reason I'm (trying) to stay away from ebay "type" coins for now (the next day or so) but not errrors of course.

It's not that I'm spending a lot, I really shouldn't. It's more like I am trading some coins for others. I have sold and am selling extra error coins on ebay to cash up for the next purchase.

I had and still have a ton of bu bisons that coinstar eats up very quickly. All of those coin get searched for errors first of course. I was also holding them because the metal value is worth more than a nickel, but that's kinda mute now. I think I would rather have a nice real Trade dollar in my book than 200 dollar worth of nickels.

Now back to ebay to seach for type coins .... errr I mean error coins.

WOW! I got the Trade dollar today and it's a very nice coin. Whoever lightly cleaned this coin saved me about 300 on a type coin of this quality. The details are AWESOME. There is still some mint luster where the cleaning didn't get to.

I"m very happy with this "cleaned" coin.

Can't bust it out until my daughter gets to see it.

1807 Half Cent appears to be uncleaned and is one awesome 200 year old coin. VERY, very pleased.

3 cent has awesome details but lightly cleaned as expected.

well, back to the type coin seach
