Outside of my collecting US, I like Canadian coins probably first but also Australia, Great Britain, Ireland etc.I guess those with the Queen and better yet the Kings on them as well as Victoria. Ever since that Revolutionary war I suppose we have been good friends. I think some coins from Italy have some nice designs.They sort of remind me of earlier US coinage. |

I've lived in Spain, Germany, the US, Austria and China. So I have attempted to get modern collections of these countries. China is by far the worst place to collect for faking reasons and also coin collecting is not a hobby in china, it is a way of making more money by collecting something and betting the price will go up, or by producing something that looks like an old coin, but clearly isn't. In the US I was not a coin collector, but it started me off as one with the State Quarter series and a few other circulation coins like the Buffalo nickel. Spain was good, lots of places to buy coins on a Sunday morning coin/stamp market outside, though I didn't have the money to buy anything decent. Germany has to have been the best, I lived in a town with a twice yearly coin fair, close to Munich with plenty (though I only went once). Austria was okay too, though no local coin fairs I could fine so went to Vienna. Sometimes it isn't the coins though, it is the ability to get hold of them that makes it exciting. |

ANY old country!
I have perhaps the largest collection of different square coin types in the World. About 80 altogether. It is certainly a fun collection and almost all of them have come drom dealers' junk bins, typically for less than 25 cents each.

When I started picking junk boxes, I was interested in the French coins. There's been a lot of changes to the coins that correspond to what was happening in France in say the WWI, WWII, post-war etc.
I also like Japanese coins. There was a dramatic change in its history making an easy starting point in the 1870s or so. (Unlike France or UK where you can go back to the middle ages or further.) The early coins have nice artwork, then you can watch the dramatic change in coinage (similar to France) during WWII, and then they have been pretty consistent from the 1950s on.
Aside from those two, I've sorted through a lot of junk coins and often find something to like about most countries.

When I was young, I was collecting coins from my country, but I stopped. I came back to coin collecting recently, when looking at my old boxes (I also had mixed lots). After checking ebay, I felt in love with cobs, and decided to collect anything spanish and from spanish colonies before they became independent. There are various reasons to like those coins and this era ... history was plentiful then, and I always liked the new world since I was kid (pirate stories, incas, christopher columbus, etc ...). One of my best trip souvenirs are in Peru, and I plan to visit each place in south america someday. I also like the spanish culture and history. To sum up, a lot of reasons, which together made me collect and research spanish coins :) Oh, and one last reason ... I have more money than when I was kid, and can afford collecting those coins :) |

Mexican coins can be a lot of fun and the older ones can be very rare. I belong to three different coin clubs and one is focused exclusively on Mexican coins. It's nice.

I collect from all countries but I suppose I am partial to Portuguese coins. I just love their designs.

Gotta go with Canadian....well mostly preconfederation cents from Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, PEI. et al..
