Thanks again everyone :) And johnny54321 - I love your 1856 FE!
When I was younger, I didn't know that many of the coins I have now even existed, let alone dreamed of owning them. I'm really grateful to be able to have them and share them here. In my eyes, the small eagle design symbolizes a smaller country - one that wasn't afraid to recognize that it was just getting its act together. The public didn't like the small eagle "turkey" designs but I think it genuinely shows where America came from. The same goes for chain/fugio cents - they take us back to a time when the country was much smaller and much simpler.
I was somewhat accidentally reintroduced into coin collecting some years ago and at the first show I went to, I saw my first small eagle "turban head" gold and thought - "Wow, that is a stunning and incredible coin!" Of course, I happened to be looking at a $750K+ Eagle so I was reasonably stunned, but seeing the clearly outdated hairstyle (even to my poor fashion sense!) and "179" as the first three digits of the coin's date had me hooked.
I know everyone is security conscious and therefore hesitant to share what's in their collection but frankly, I purchase coins for my enjoyment and the enjoyment of those close to me. It's easy to show a non-collector a gold coin from the 18/19th century and have them realize it is a true rarity. I hate that we're forced to lock everything away (and unfortunately I do the same - hence the horrendous pictures :)), but I think that the holidays are a time for sharing and I hope that my posts here will help inspire someone to learn more about our country and the history behind her coins.
On that note, as honorable mentions were brought up earlier... and considering that it is the 12 days of classics... here is the 12-piece more "modern" US gold set, in case some weren't aware that the entire thread could have been completed solely in beautiful gold :)
$20 1901-S Liberty
$20 1924 Saint
$10 1901 Liberty
$10 1910 Indian
$5 1904 Liberty

$3 1856-S Medium S (EF-40 details, but one of the harder $3 gold pieces to find)
$2.50 1915 Indian
$2.50 1878 Liberty Head

Happy Holidays, everyone!
