I suppose if the grades are identical, there is no reason why you cannot add a "quantity on hand" column.

I only have my Dansco albums in the spreadsheet. The miscellaneous rolls and "hoards" are not inventoried.

It's great to read all the comments in this thread! Carl's point (I think) is that if you enjoy coin collecting, just collect coins and don't worry about the databasing. If you need to track things and databasing appeals to the OCD side of your nature, then go for it. I put my entire collection into a spreadsheet (excel) several years ago and it has really helped reduce duplicates and give me an idea of what I have - and don't have. I end up tweaking and updating things a lot but that's one of the ways that I enjoy my collection.

I use databases at work (filemaker and bento) and I have been thinking about moving my coin collection into one of those. This will be especially useful now that bento has a mobile app for iphone/ipad that would be very good for shows, etc. However, losing some of the ability to do calculations (add quantities and values of each coin) will make this less flexible. Does anyone have any experience with these or suggestions?

I'm using the 2004ish version of CoinsPlus and I absolutely love it. There is no fuss or muss to use this program. I would recommend that everyone should use it.
I do, however, also use an Excel spreadsheet when I am actively "pursuing" a run of coins and then add the bulk entries into the database.

There are some of us who use MS Access. A database might be considered a step up from spreadsheets. Especially if your number of records gets quite large.

I just read back through this thread after skimming the first time.

jbuck - I had to laugh about your Commodore 128. It reminded of my Vic20 with a tape drive....

I am reluctant to share how I tracked my coins on my first home computer (Sinclair ZX-81 with tape drive), let alone the Commodore 64 that preceded my C128.

Yeah, I stepped up to a 64 after my vic20. Then it was up to an 8086 IBM (used of course) with Lotus 123. Ahh, the good old days when my hair had color and my monitor did not.

At the risk of going too far off topic, I will say that I clung to Commodore (and Amiga) well into the early 1990's before finally giving them up for the PC/clone world (My clone experience dates to the late 1980's, but that was not for home use).

I was starting to have problems remembering where stuff was and what I had. So, I asked myself what I was really after and what sets I want to collect. I sold a lot of the coins I really didn't care about and bought a few very nice coins. Deciding to collect higher grade coins was a great way to unload a bunch of coins. I have to do this every now and then, because I end up buying a bunch of coins just because they are fantastic deals, or picks.

Lot of interesting post to read through.

I am still inputting coins into the spreadsheet. I think the way I am collecting I need to have good records.
I have so many dansco's going, there is not way I can remember which coins I need. writing out a list does not
work for me. Last couple coin shows I have been buying coins I had and not the ones I need.

Now I am in the process of moving the better coins to the bank boxes. So it will be harder to check which coins I need .. or need to up grade. When I get my inventory done I will be able to load it onto a PC/notebook or tablet.

Right now I am buying/selling coins 5 or 6 days a week ... it has been getting out of control

I might have to get jbuck and his Comodore 128 to help me out

The best advice I can offer is patience. You will get done, so do not worry about when you will get done.

You may be surprised to find out that my Commodore 128 is still operational to this day. That is, it is actually hooked up and used from time to time.

My first computer was a Tandy TRS80 color computer.
Anyone else have one of those.

I don't but a colleague of mine "several days ago" purchased a Tandy TRS80 and swore by it.

The CoCo.

Never had one, but there was a small group of them that called into my old BBS.

I started my inventory in Lotus 1-2-3 in the mid 80s and now I use Excel, since the early 90s. I have been thinking of using MS Access, but that takes too much time to create the forms, etc. If someone had a template in Access and a way to import from Excel, that would be cool to see.

Not sure if Access would be much better than Excel though?
