The Proof nickels in 1942 were the last US proof nickels until 1950. There are two types of 1942 Proofs. One is a pre war composition and the other is a "war" nickel that has silver and a large P over the dome of Monticello. Wish you posted a better image of that nickel you have as it sure looks like a nice one. Here's mine that I bought as a BU nickel and got lucky. I bought it from a small listing image but had a hunch. If this isn't a proof, I hope it would grade pretty high on the MS scale but I never got mine professionally graded yet. I'm 98% sure its a proof though.

Quote: Hmmm ... there were no Proof war-alloy Jefferson minted ... so the answer to that question is an unequivocal 'No".
A nickelsearcher should know better than to make that statement.

What did you use to take that photo? I will try and get some clearer pictures, but I seem to be having trouble with lighting.

There's no way the original posters coin can be a proof, since its an S mint. The only War Nickel proofs were 1942 P. I also agree that it grades at AU-58.

Thanks everyone! I will try and get better pictures when my sister returns. She has a nice and fancy camera. I'm really shocked that I found that in the wild. I hope I didnt use up all my luck for the year . What would you estimate the coin is worth, my Red Book says 12-15 bucks?

Numismedia shows it under $7.50 in ms63, double that for 64, double again for 65.
Can't tell by pix, but yours may only be au, and I can tell you, high grade warnix are not that easy to find.

Not going to say a grade until better pics are posted, but best roll find on War Nickel I have ever seen. nickelsearcher, THAT is beautiful. If it isn't prrof I would be REALLY shocked.

Prepare to be REALLY shocked when you read the posts that explain why it can't be prrof.

I think you could get as good of a profit selling it without a "slab" but you should at least put it in a 2x2 flip. Compare to TheNickelGuy's posted pic. Left and right well defined steps with center full steps. Personally, I would not sell it.

Fred, I was speaking of the nickel that nickelsearcher posted, not the one the op posted. As I said, I am not taking a shot at grade based on those first pics.

Oh. misunderstood. I suspect that one is proof, unfortunately.
