Nice pick! Is this a hole filler or an upgrade?

As with most of my purchases, it's most likely going to be a catch-and-release. Like biologists, I catch them, tag them (photographically), and then let them go.

How much value does this VAM add to the coin?

I can't say I'm sure. I expect that its' premium lies more with the grade than the VAM; popularity is iffy in the sense that the only real demand for the vast majority of VAMs is in the upper end of the grade scale since there are still relatively few serious VAM collectors.

There's only one other "known" MS65 VAM-3F, a 3F3 which hammered for $345 at Heritage in 2004. That's encouraging; it's almost 3 times what I paid for this coin.

As we speak, there is a 3F3 in ANACS MS63 on Heritage, and 3 AU VAM-3F2's on ebay plus an "unknown" (not represented in any counts of Condition Census) 3F3 in NGC MS65 (overgraded, IMO). This points out a problem in the current world of VAMming - people are holding back knowledge of coins in the interest of higher profits. I'll be watching the results of these auctions.

So, is the coin presented here at the top of the Condition Census by two full grades? Unknown. I will guarantee, though, that it's going to be a part of the public record just as soon as I can get it under my own lens.

I've never really placed much faith in the "denticle impressions" theory, and having a coin whose impressions are as strong as this one doesn't help me much. Given that denticles are negative on the die, I find it difficult to imagine how they'd make a positive impression on another die upon clashing with it. My guess is that these impressions aren't so much "denticle impressions" as "stuff between the denticles" impressions - their size and spacing is more like the space between denticles than the denticles themselves.

They *do* have the correct size, spacing and slight arc to match if that's what they are.

Nice pick SuperDave! You sucketh the best this month, that mark I was seeing on the cheek doesn't look so bad in your photos, I was wondering how it garnered a MS65 with a chunk in the middle, but now I see it's really not a chunk just a kiss from another coin.

Man, those are some excellent close-up shots. How do you take these pictures, SuperDave? I wish more ebay auctions had photos like these.

Darth Morgan, go have a look in the Coin Photography forum below this one. I am not the best photographer posting here, and we discuss what it takes in great detail there.

It's easy, physically, but not easy in terms of the learning curve you have to climb. It's also not cheap.

Dave I just sent in a 63/64 3F3 ...the later with the radial die break that has the denticle impressions as sharp as your coin. It is in a bulk submission to pcgs as of Tuesday. I do not own the coin a buddy sent it to me to look at and I asked if he wished to have it graded and just sent it. Once I get it back I will up load a few photos to your post. I also sent in a 1879 S with very high hopes for a MS-67 end roller color.
Rest in Peace

That's a great looking coin Dave. Is it a catch and release or will you hang on to this one?

Dave, I'll be generating a little buzz over the summer, and offering it in the CCF booth at the ANA Philly show at a firm price. If that price is not met, it stays with me.

Russ, there's an NGC 65 (decent for the grade) 3F3 on ebay right now, attributed. The VAM Herd doesn't pay ebay a lot of attention these days....just sayin'.
