Property auctions and goodwill auctions almost always bring ridiculous prices. People seem to think if the cops stole confiscated it, it must be valuable.

On those sights (that's where I am getting the $ numbers), gold coins and bars usually go for 3x-10x spot. However, silver coins and bars might go 2x spot.

Quote: wasn't too bad Except for the fact that most dealers would sell it for under $200, and under $250 for a proof.

I did not bid on these auctions that closed today, but I was shocked at the prices paid for these bullion bars. They are common bars, with nothing special. 1 Gram Gold Bar: hammer price $203.00 (just under 4 times spot price of $52.09) 1 Gram Gold Bar: hammer price $233.56 (almost 4.5 times spot price of $52.09) 5 Grain Gold Bar: hammer price $175.00 (over 9 times spot price of $18.51) 1 Gram Platinum Bar: hammer price $253.00 (over 5 times spot price of $47.24)

Tonight's listings: 1 Gram Gold Bar: hammer price $303.00 (just under 6 times spot price of $52.26) 1 Gram Gold Bar: hammer price $280.56 (just over 5 times spot price of $52.26) 5 Grain Gold Bar: hammer price $34.00 (less than 2 times spot price of $18.57) - a bargain compared to the next listing 5 Grain Gold Bar: hammer price $206.00 (just over 11 times spot price of $18.57) seems someone is seeing "gold bar" and just bidding without concern for what they are actually getting in return

Quote: 5 Ounce Silver Bar: hammer price $245.00 (over 8 times spot price of $28.82) 8 times? I don't understand your math. 28.82 x 5 oz. = 144.10 Very high, but not even double spot. I do agree with your premise, though. Prices are crazy high, right now.

Tonight's crazy listings: these are just basic bullion coins, and the auctions were using stock photos.

and two of these for the same price each 2010 $5 Gold Eagle: hammer price $397.89 (just over 2.5 times spot price of $157.31)
