I was thinking number three was a trick question, as what sterling silver is ever marked .800?

Sterling silver is an alloy of 925 parts silver 75 parts copper. Nothing in the question mentions sterling. It's coin silver.

Not like we get graded or fired or anything when we do take the tests, but if you get a test an the question is....What US coins are 90% from the years 1964 or earlier? And you can't even come up with quarters, halves an dimes, then your coin career may be a short one, lol....

You fergitched 3¢ after 1853, Half Dimes, Twenty Cent Pieces, dollars and Trade dollars.

Gold can also be marked with a decimal....like .585 for 14K, or .333 for 8K.

I saw a bracelet the other day marked 14K and .753. I have no idea huh.

Too bad that these Ikes aren't worth much. I see them for sale sometimes for $1.50-2.00 but that's hardly worth messing with. I'll probably just spend them one of these days.

If you're talking about 40% Ikes, they're worth more than two 40% halves, around ten bucks.

8. If you have a sterling silver flatware set that weighs a total of 2,358 pennyweights, how many troy ounces of pure silver does that set contain?

Trick question, since knives aren't silver blades.

If it's all sterling, .925*2358/20=109.0575

Quote:
9.If you have an Iranian Gold coin which the Krause catalog states physically weighs 25 grams and carries a purity of .9170, how much pure gold does it cotain?

While you have the book open, look at the AGW. Should be 0.737

Quote:
10.What is the purity of a pre 1965 silver dime?

89.24-90%, depending on date

11.If a Canadian commemorative silver coin which Krause states pyysically weighs 15 grams and carries a purity of http://www.coincommunity.com/forum/...nks.asp.925, how much pure silver does the coin contain?

I dunno, but the date is 404. I suspect the answer they want is 0.4461 troz

Quote:

22k, same as an AGE.

Quote:
13. If I have a group of 10 karat gold (alls tones removed) that weighs 614 pennyweights, how much pure gold does the group contain?

Gotta watch them alls tones. 243.04 dwt, 255.8 if plumb.

14. If I have an Israeli Gold coin which the Krause catalog states physically weights 42 grams and carries a purity of .875, how much pure gold does the coin contain?

Prolly none, but it's supposed to have 1.18 troz.

Quote:
15. If the gold spot price is 1,714.95, what is the value of the pure gold contained in a British Sovereign?

There's no pure gold in an English sovereign, but its gold content when new was $403.70.

Quote:
16.If the spot price of silver is 33.67 and you have a bowl that is marked .900 and weighs 462 pennyweights, what is the value of the pure silver contained in the bowl?

Reminds me of the time my wife went to Mexico and brought back some sterling bracelets for gifts. She thought markings meant something. Snookered by a five year old.

If the markings are correct, the silver value is $700.

Not legal for trade simply means they can't be certified for accuracy.

No, theses are not 40% silver coins. They are just some bi-centennial Cu-Ni coins that have the "1776-1976" date on them. Their brownish edges give away the fact that they are not silver coins. Yeah, if they were 40% silver, they would be worth quite a bit more. These are basically just some curiosity items. :-/

Purt near zero.

Yes and no. But you can bet if someone wanted to give me a box of 14KGF, I'd be on it like stink on .

21. If you have a ring marked ".950," what type of metal is that ring likely to be?

silver. too high to be platinum, not a common marking (22.8K) for gold.

No gubmint puts 8% too much gold in a coin.

24. If the gold spot is 1529.45, what is the value of pure gold contained in one oz. gold Krugerrand?

Poorly worded (as are most of these), but 1529.45. Now, what is the face value of that coin?

Quote:

1.2056 * 1879.2 = 2265.56

Quote:
28.What is the pure silver content of a pre-1965 bag of silver dimes, quarters, and half dollars that total 742.25 in spendable face value?

OK, you got me. Most places use .715, so 530.71 oz

29.What is the common purity of early 1900's and prior foreign gold coins?

Oops, forgot one. 22k (.9167 fine)

Quote:
30. If I have a flatware set in which each items is marked as "silver plate", would we make an offer?

Prolly not, but that's store policy, not lack of value. I know one dealer who pays 25¢ per undamaged piece, we've always paid 50¢ to $1 a pound, depending on quantity.

If your boss doesn't want it, ask if you can buy it. It's a no-lose deal.

The only difference between me and most of your test takers is only needed a calculator (and could do without it), and your folks would need reference info.

Well, as we all know gold or silver should have no magnetic attraction if there are no other metals present correct?

I know before I started working at the shop, I needed some cash to square up a few bills, an sold 15 oz. to my boss, an he put the magnet to one of the small one oz. sealed plastic Morgan bars, an it had a very slight pull around the middle, but he deemed it was perhaps just a metal pour rod used for structural foundation perhaps, any of you ever heard of that happening?

Anyhow, he bought them anyway an ruled it off as nothing to be concerned about, again is was a very slight attraction, not like a real fake coin where the magnet will pinch your finger off linking up with the foreign metal.....

If he was using an earth magnet what he probably felt was diamagnetism....

If you're getting pull through a heavy gauge plastic, something's wrong. That's beyond diamagnetism.
