Other than packaging, how do you identify one of these 40% Ike dollars?

No silver dollars have been minted since 1935 with the exception of the 40% Ikes between 1971 and 1976. The Ikes contain .3161 oz silver.

Don't forget the 1964 Peace dollars and Silver Eagles!

Good call Amida I did not realize the Ikes 71-76 were 40%....

I have a couple of the 1776-1976 bicentennial Ike dollars and a bicentennial Kennedy half dollar that have the brownish edges typical of the Cu-Ni coins. The two mid-late 60s half dollars that I have do not show this. Too bad that these Ikes aren't worth much. I see them for sale sometimes for $1.50-2.00 but that's hardly worth messing with. I'll probably just spend them one of these days.

Welcome CJTM92.....

"Don't forget the 1964 Peace dollars and Silver Eagles!"

I did not realize they made a 1964 Peace dollar, is it as well .7734?

Silver Eagles are pure bullion coins at .999 and did not begin minting until 1986....

Perhaps you are confused with Walking Liberty half dollars....

This seller claims it is silver plated the 1964 an he has no bids at 10 bucks free ship with only 8 hours to go....

http://www.ebay.com/itm/1964-D-PEAC...em256f12b767

I saw some others listed around 375 bucks, and I have not read about them yet but I am guessing they are not simply plated in silver....

In '64, they minted roughly 300,000 of them and soon after they were all melted down. Rumors are there that a few higher ranked Mint Officials own one, but it's just that, a rumor.

Also, I really can't figure out why I said Silver Eagles. Maybe I was thinking since it says "One Dollar," but I really can't figure it out haha.

Talking about all these government machinations concerning coins and their issuance makes me wonder... hmmm... LBJ was from Texas and so were the Hunt Bros. Any connection there? Hard to say but it is odd that coins would be minted and then simply melted again. IMHO, if the government had any sense at all, they should have auctioned off those coins and made... well, a mint.

8. Answer: 1 pennyweight = 0.05 troy ounces and sterling silver has a purity of .925 therefore...

(2358 x .925) x 0.05 = 109.06 troy ounces of Ag

9. Answer: simply multiply weight by purity...
25 x .917 = 22.925 grams of Au

10. Answer: See Wikipedia

11. Answer: simply multiply weight by purity...
15 x .925 = 13.875 grams of Ag

12. Answer: see Wikipedia

13. Answer: 10k gold has a purity of .4167 so simply multiply weight by purity...
614 x .4167 = 255.8538 pennyweights of Au

14. Answer: simply multiply weight by purity
42 x .875 = 36.75 grams of Au

15. Answer: coin weight is 7.9881 grams, crown gold has a purity of .9167, and 1 troy ounce = 31.103 grams, and spot price of $1714.95...
(7.9881 x .9167) x (1714.95 / 31.103) =
(7.3227) x (55.1233) = $403.65

16. Answer: bowl weight is 462 pennyweights, Ag purity .900, 1 pennyweight = 0.05 troy ounces, and spot price of $33.67...
(462 x .9) x (33.67 x 0.05) =
(415.8) x (1.68) = $700.00

Notes: I rounded larger decimal numbers to no more than four places to make it easier to read. I also rounded $ values to whole cents.

ALSO, be careful when calculating the weight of sterling silver flatware sets. Knife handles are typically sterling but the knife blades are high quality stainless steel.

Hey thanks Coinwatch for taking the time to help out....

We typically buy sterling knives at 10 DWT and 5 DWT on the butter knives, and they can also have clay mold in the handles as well which can throw the weight way off....

No problem. I just hope I understood your questions correctly. Hopefully someone else here on the forum will be kind and help check my math.

What's that disclaimer sticker you sometimes see on those really cheap scales? "My calculations are not suitable for business or trade!"
