I'm guessing NGC gave it an AU details grade and I believe west is correct on the attribution.

First let me thank everyone for their evals. Before I reveal what the plastic case reads, I need your advice. The coin arrived in the case with this evidence of tampering. The coin inside may not be the one listed. Should I: 1) return the coin; 2)crack the case and take the coin out, put it in my own holder; 3) Leave it alone

Does it look like the holder was actually taken apart or just damaged? The grade on the holder could be no better than AU and will help determine this.

I can't tell if the holder was "super-glued" or not, as I only have PCGS holders and am not familiar with the jagged edged line of the NGC holders. There is damage to both sides. It almost looks as if someone tried to "squeeze" it open with a vice, as the indentations into the plastic are deep. The case is not fractured across the front or back, which is why in the ad's photo, you could not see the damage on the sides. As to the grade, nearly everyone was close to the mark.

That holder has definitely been tampered with... or at least someone tried to tamper with the holder. Personally, I would return a coin that showed even a fraction of that amount of 'damage' to a holder. There is absolutely no reason for there to be damage like that, much less to both sides. Please send it back if you can !

Another one I see a lot is where a very fine drill bit is used on all four sides to crack the holder and then the holes are filled with super glue. People will try anything...

Do not hesitate. Send it back now. If you purchased this through ebay and payed with paypal, be sure and contact the seller through ebay to document this. You may have to open a claim through paypal if the buyer is being shady, which is likely as they sold a slab in this condition.

NGC holders have a Funky look where they are sonically sealed and to the novice appear to be tampered with.

This is a $30 coin. If you paid more than that, send it back.

Yes, I paid $30 and I believe I will keep and liberate the coin. Another one for the vault. Thank you, gents, for your expertise and consideration.

By all means keep it for $30. Crack it out and save the label attributing it as a Top- 100 VAM.

I have to profess my ignorance. I understand the VAM part (a type of coin variation), but what do the other numbers mean.
