The silver bicentennial issue had an S mint mark. They may be called "silver" dollars but are actually a copper and nickel mixture.

buddy: I would have to agree... although they might not hold a great value I think they are awesome. I have never come across these until a few months ago when I received my first one as a tip (I work at a casino). on a different date from a different person I received the other 5 together as "payment".

coinaholic: thanks for your link also and clarifying the mint marks I thought were D's... they are S's. How would I go about identifying silver vs copper nickel mixtures? My guess would be a magnet?

any advice on cleaning coins? or are they better as is?

@ILVUCURRENCY: I don't think you are nuts at all. When I am at the bank or store, if I have an extra dollar or two in my pocket, and they have those in their drawer, I take them off their hands and bring them home for no reason. Getting a bag full of them pretty quick.

And I'd say don't clean them. I prefer coins that show some age. By cleaning them you won't bring up their grade (someone correct this noob if I am wrong there), and in fact you can end up damaging them bringing their value down.
