Hi guys

I ran this coin through my SPM software to see if we can see the item under LIBERTY, hope you can see it better.

I tried looking into the photo you had up first . and tried to focus it in to show what I see ..

Seems like "3" sets of LIBERTY to my eye .. And I tried going through my error book to try and match it to something with no luck .. So curious what this will wind up being labeled ..

Will be taking notes on this one lol .

I'm thinking a counterbrockage with a rotating die cap. But I am not an expert.

Ohh CaptainFwiffo -

That is a good thought .! ...

Checking out some of the "CounterBrockages and Rotating Die Cap" I can see that causing what we see here ..

Great Thinking ElCapteetan.! ;-)

The coin is damaged, most likely by someone pplaying with a hammer and a soft die. If it were multiple struck in any circumstance, the reverse sould not be flattened and bowed like this coin. Striking the obverse takes a reverse, and this coin had no reverse die when these so-called strikes were made. So post-mint damage it is.

I agree that the coin is damaged but I believe
it was done so during the initial strike/strikes.
At least some of it.
A lot going on here on both the ovb. and rev.
That first shelving from the neck down to the shoulder
(M.D.) would be hard to do with just a soft die hammering.
I think there was some debris on the rev. die and the hammer
die was messed up some. I.E.: Excessive pressure and or a loose collar. Still no big deal but interesting anyway.

Garage job. Chuck got it. The reverse would show the same rotation as the obverse. And the date is not affected, so it was not struck that way at the mint.

It never was, it is altered. Someone trying to perfect a way to fake them. So keep on the watch on ebay for fakes.

So they were trying to fake a '31-S or something then?

I find it fascinating that someone would actually take time, effort a hammer and soft die to this. Even more amazing is this "priceless coin forum with vast advance analysis Sadly, I believe that this is most likely PMD due to the reverse, still, I'm baffled on the mindset that would do this! Thank you all for your inputs. When I return home I will view this reverse more and will take more pictures to look for anything other than PMD on that reverse.
Hooyah,
Boats John
