I'm on the fence with this, so far. Depending on Carl's response, I'll be swayed one way or the other.
If the dealer was just calling him to simply inform him, that's one thing. If they agreed that Carl would buy it, that's another. If that were the case, I would side with Carl, and would never go to that dealer again. Actually, I would go one step further and tell the dealer that he lost a regular because he pulled something like that.
Having a good name (in my eyes) is much more important that a couple hundred dollars more in my pocket. Especially since I feel that a good name will pay itself back countless times.

I agree with NYBrian84, I think that says it all.
If he did say he would hold it, a deal is a deal.
I have a similar situation. In a local shop I frequent, there are two Owners. I have looked at coins, picked out what I want; been given a price by one owner; PULLED my money from my wallet; and had the second owner change the price.
This has happened three times now. And the difference was never more than two dollars. And to arrive at the change in price the second owner has poured over the grey sheet looking up every single coin I had picked out.
I used to drop a Thousand dollars a month at that shop; before the change of ownership. Now it is around a hundred dollars.
So for the sake of making less than an extra five dollars on all three purchases they have lost Nine Hundred. The pity is I have talked to no less than half a dozen other regular customers that have had similar experiances there and will not shop there at all now.
They have lost probably five to seven thousand dollars a month with their business practices. It seems all they really care about is bringing in sellers and then wholesaling the incoming material to national numismatic companies.

I've been talking to him at coin shows for well over 10 years and he knows full well what I collect. I emailed him I'd sse him at the coin show on Sunday. Again, ne knew full well I never miss that show since I've been going there for a long, long time. That show is supposed to open at 9AM. I got there at 9AM but as usual, many people were there at 8:30AM so I suppose that is where it got purchased. No idea what he was offered but I suppose whatever it was, was enough to make him loose a customer. Quote: There's an attractive '16-D in MS61FB on Heritage right now. I never buy over the internet anymore. Way to many coin shows by me so the chances of finding another one in MS grade is rather very possible. I will be really ticked off about that 21D for a long time.

Carl, then I have to agree. That was a classless move on his part. And if you have a good selection of folks to choose from in your area, then certainly, take your money elsewhere.

Yeah that was pretty low. I'd be ticked off as well. Nice move though to not ever buy from him again.

He's know you for that long and all he cared about was a little more profit on the coin? I agree, low class. He chose wrong :-(

This dealer recently opened a coin store. I suspect he needs a lot of money to get it rolling so that could be the reason he took the best offer and the heck with steady customers. It really makes no CENTS to me since I've been buying from him for many years now.

That dealer is only interested in making a buck and not keeping customers. Glad to hear you won't be dealing with him again. Sorry you missed out on the deal though.

Did you let him know that he has now, due to his lack of respect, lost a long time customer? What was his reaction when you told him that you didn't apreciate the knife in the back?

Pretty bad ethics there. Sorry to here that. I'd like to see the set, I'm sure it's beautiful.
Hope the 21D you do get is a 65 and you pay 64 money for it. :)

It's just one customer he might say... But if he keeps this up with other regulars that he acquires, he's gonna be out of business fast. I'm just amazed because he's known you 10 years. That is just insane that he would do that.

Actually did nothing nor said anything. Kind of to much in shock especially when he said but I do have a 16D you might want. I just walked away. I think he must know my future with him is gone.
