You'd be impressed at the great toning one gets from a few days of contact, especially during the hot summer months.

Oh my, this is going south fast. I still like that 1857 Large Cent no matter where it has traveled.

Gentlemen, please. Definitely recolored, and looking like it's going to go for genuinely stupid money - it's at fair value right now.

*makes note to try this method sometime* It simply has been treated to remove verdigris at some point. Its a beautiful coin. AU50 values around 350, so 280 that its at is reasonable. I dont think its going to go for a ton more than value, but we shall see.

Maybe I'm not suspicious enough but the color looks OK to me. I've seen many certified, no-problem large cents with similar chocolate color. The brown shades a bit to greenish around the rim and I see a bit of schmutz between some of the denticles but nothing that screams "altered surface". Detail is solid AU with a sharp portrait and typical weakness on the stars and part of the wreath.
I wouldn't be ashamed to have it in my collection.....

Kopper ken - you're killing me here Dave Vermontensium and SuperDave, I get how this coin looks to evenly colored and is suspicious. Is it the rims being the exact same hue that give it away?. I am certainly not discrediting your wisdom at all . I'm looking to learn how to spot recoloring and am wondering if you could elaborate on what you see. Thank you, Steve

Smoker... I agree that there might have been verdigris around stars 5 & 6 and there looks like there is some kind of gunk in the area. Those issues can be remedied. There are too many obv.field nicks and there is significant rev. top leaf wear to call this an MS coin. I just looked and I see that it is way over AU money. KK

Steve, http://www.wizardcoinsupply.com/del...arkener.htmlMore than likely this or a product like it. Generally used to improve the appearance of the surfaces (hide an old cleaning, spotting, imperfections, etc) You can usually see discoloration on other parts of the coin, usually the rim or blotchiness in the fields.

Great link Rayman! Notice above the L of LIBERTY and rim above obverse at 12 o'clock on the 1853. Sure signs of a recolored coin.

Went for 370, AU money, so not a deal, but not stupid either.
As for re color, maybe yes, maybe no. There is no way to say 100% for sure, and its not like the coin has been altered or damaged. I would have been all in on that one up to about 300.
