On ebay-US, it's against ebay rules to charge a premium for using Paypal, that's why it is presented as a "discount" if you pay by another method. I am confused about the "buyer's premium" that you mention. Since I have never bought or sold anything through an ebay live auction, just the standard auctions, I have never had to deal with this.

I am talking about normal ebay auctions On ebay UK some will offer a discount for not using paypal On ebay Germany they will mostly say the cost for using paypal is 5% and you agree by bidding As I understand it you get a discount on your ebay fee if you offer paypal and you get a discount if you offer shipping discounts on multiple coin buys This guy in austria even included the link so you can calculate the extra cost for using paypal https://www.paypal.com/at/cgi-bin/w...e&countries=So you see the cost is 3.4% plus 0.35 euro fix

Susan, you have to pay a 20% buyers fee vs 15% if your a live floor bidder.A buyers premium is standard on all auctions that I have participated in. That was one of the original attractions to ebay. Prices are now inflated to match "hanmmer prices" from the standard auction results. Check out the live auction sites. It is clearly explained. Example, you bid $100.00, if you win you pay "$120.00" hammer price, plus shipping and in some cases, even though you say it's against the rules, a 2&1/2% penalty for using paypal or a credit card. I will post a listing that states these condition as soon as I dig up my records.Mike

Ageka, I know for a fact that, on ebay-US, there is no discount given to sellers for accepting Paypal or offering shipping discounts. International ebay sites allow sellers to add the selling and paypal fees into their price, while in the US, it's not permitted. I believe this is due to the federal law prohibiting charging additional fees for credit card acceptance that was put into place a while ago. Many sellers try to hide these fees in their shipping/handling amount, however. Mike, I thought your "buyers premium" reference was in conjunction with ebay, which is why I was confused. Many of the actual auction houses are raising the premium and I've seen it as high as 20%. There are probably some that are even higher.

Thanks, Mike Download Attachment: ebay Stuff.doc 49.1 KB Susan,I am talking about " ebay Live!" auctions hosted by various auction houses and now allowing bidders from ebay. I was pointing out that because you are not bidding "live" you pay an extra 5%!!

That's very interesting Mike. If you see any of these auctions in the future, I would strongly suggest contacting Visa, Mastercard, and American Express and notifying them of the "courtesy fee" and including a link to the auction page(s). Mastercard, especially, has been known to immediately close merchant accounts when this rule (merchants are not allowed to charge an additional fee for accepting cc payments) is violated. It is also illegal to force a minimum purchase for a cc payment and if the cc company is notified of a business doing this, they will investigate and often just close the merchant's account on the spot. The cc companies feel very strongly that buyers should not be penalized by using their services.

Susan, I am still searching for the auction house that clearly stated the penalty for using paypal! I found my snotty E-Mail response to them, but nothing in their text on the mail communication that states what they said. Many of the "Auction Houses" charge that fee! I'll take your advice and forward this info to all of the credit card companies they listed. Bt the way, some folks, including me, use my credit card on paypal, so in effect that get the 2 1/2% anyway unless I do a direct debit from my checking account. Mike

The 2.9% that Paypal charges should not be something you pay, as a buyer. Those are fees that the seller (or recipient of the money) is responsible for. That amount is deducted from the final amount received by the seller, not added into the payment by the buyer.

Example this guys says he prefers paypal Hidden in small text for international bidders PayPal (+3% for fee ) Another surprise is surely the shipping cost outside of europe which insured will be something like 35 euro The cost mentioned in the text 7.5 E is for uninsured shipping http://cgi.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...7773125&rd=1

He's within the rules to charge the fee. It is only on the US site that this is not allowed.

This is from the ebay site. Excessive Shipping & Handling ebay encourages sellers to clearly describe the item and terms of shipping and delivery in their listings to avoid possible confusion. A shipping and handling fee can cover the seller's reasonable costs for mailing, packaging and handling the item. However, shipping and handling fees may not be listed as a percentage of the final sale price. i.e. Postage of $5.00 is unreasonable when only a 37 cent stamped envelope is used. When a bid is placed, the bidder is entering into an agreement with the seller to purchase the item, which most often means incurring reasonable shipping charges that may also include handling fees. In the case of disagreements between buyers and sellers regarding shipping charges, ebay encourages the parties to try to work the matter out. Violations of this policy may result in a range of actions, including: Listing cancellation Limits on account privileges Account suspension Why does ebay have this policy? This policy reduces the potential for confusion among bidders about the full cost of an item. Listings that include excessive shipping and handling fees lead to a poor buying experience and un-level the playing field by putting sellers who charge reasonable shipping and handling charges at a disadvantage. These listings undermine the trust and legitimacy of eBay’s marketplace.

Unfortunately, this is yet another example of a rule that ebay rarely enforces (unless the s/h charges are so far out of line that my 11-year-old could see it). I reported a number of coin auctions that had shipping of $10-$25 for a single coin (insurance not included). ebay did nothing because they really don't have a clue how much it costs to ship a coin. The lack of knowledge there is truly amazing, and how can they enforce rules when they don't even understand them?

I agree that vendors do not have to ship for free Everybody has to earn a living But I nearly allways ask the shipping cost up front I asked the price for to german ebay offers today one answered with the correct formula 3.5 euro base plus 1 euro per 100 insured The second stated 17 euro flat Now up front you do not know whether the second is cheating because 17 is what DHL would ask and to ship cheap with the german mail you have seal the lettre using wax and put a signet ring in and some people refuse the hassle

I saw a non-coin auction and had a Buy-It-Now price of one cent but the shipping was $5.65! Is that fee advoidence at its best?

It is quite common in Australia to have to pay "a premium" to use paypal, has cost me 4-10% for the joy of paypal. Australia has a better banking system- you can make deposits through the banks. My bank allows it with no fees.
