1944 KGVI - How Do You Grade KGVI?

Thanks you Mr T and enworb, I guess the key is to know what ware out first in the detail. Looking at the hair on my 1944's I can see only 1 stand out for the hair. (cannot see it on the picture I posted at a good scan is too large to post.

Hair then ear as a guide then. For QEII the leafs in the hair would be the first to go?

Also does the reverse play into the grade? E.g. A really good KGVI and bad Roo?

I look straight to the sideburns on KGVI, then the hair. Like I said often theyre weakly struck. Its good to closely look at that region with a loupe and try and determine if the lack of detail is due to strike or wear.

Yours has too much wear to see the sideburns. Wait for AA's photos which if its struck up well should show them. By sideburns I mean the little bit of hair to the left of the ear.

Unfortunately that coin looks like it has been harshly cleaned,you can see there is virtually no detail in the hair below the part,the top of the ear has a lot of wear & the flat spot on the cheek & eye brow.

I've been messin with your pic & I drew red lines,the areas inside where wear shows most.



The tip of his nose looks like it has wear too.

Thanks AA! Ok these look MUSH harder to get an idea of the grade for a noob then a KGV. Cleaning was not done by me! So I guess that makes these somewhat worthless :( Cleaning I know also makes them next to worthless...... Of well.

Although this one seems to have some crud it is a much better example thab the previous one. There is plenty of detail in the hair and the sideburns are quite strong. Althoughh its hard from a scan I would say VF-gVF for that obverse.

You need to see a lot of KGVI coins to work out what is strike and what is wear. Its something I'm not overly confident, especially not from scans. Something I have noticed though is that silver coins are generally easier to grade from photos for the KGVI obverse.

I'm not sure where the wear tends to happen but I always look at the wreath.
