This coin was vandalized outside the Mint. It's not an error.

It's damage.Could it have happened prior to being struck? I'll let others answer that but I doubt it.

Those letters are incuse in the coin. That is why the line does not go through them.

I wonder how they got the marks under the Raised letters...

I agree Jay, Mike is the last word on these. Just makes me wonder sometimes, what happened or how could it have happened. As sdd noted the O and the A look perfect. Its just weird to me

Once again, those letters are incuse. The dent from the impact caused a line but the dent did not go as deep as the incuse lettering did so the dent does not appear to go through the letter. You see it on either side but not on the letter itself.

Could it be a defective planchet ? I don't see how the damage would not effect the devices. I'm just trying to learn so I don't make the same mistake .
