When I was a wee-lad of 11 or 12 my family had a change jar. I was rolling coins in it so we could take it to the bank(this was 2 years savings for our family vacation) well with the pennies I just stated putting them in chronological order had almost all from 65-2000 (dates may have varied a bit). My grandfather was a coin collector and I called him and told him of all the pennies I had in order, at that point he asked if I had all the P's and D's, I was like what? At that point the Fever began to set in. I am now 24 so I have been collecting for 11-13 years Depending on when this ^^^^^^^ actually happened!

I've been collecting for about 5 years now. I don't remember my first coin per se, but my Dad had a pile of random foreign change from his travels and I always enjoyed going through them as a kid. That sparked something in my late 20s.

Just started a while back. My Dad gave me a brand new 1943 Cent. They just came out. That got me started and I still have it. Seams like a few days ago.

I have been collecting for about 10 years and more seriously for a couple of years. My passion for the hobby became much stronger when I bought a Flying Eagle cent after looking at my grandfathers modest accumulation of old silver coins. Moving to a large city with many coin shops and better inventories of rare coins for sale has really ignited my interest. Back in the small city I grew up in they had one coin shop that had few very collectible and what they had was priced above RedBook. So moving was a renaissance of sorts, finding better stuff at reasonable prices.

That you for sharing your story. The answer to your first question is in my signature. I remember the first two coins. Those who have been around a while know what they are.

My very first collecting was when I was probably about 5. My parents played a game called "Tripoli" that used a ton of pennies. My brother and I used to sort through those pennies for hours. Of course they were the same pennies over and over so not many new finds in there.
But I didn't actually start buying coins until about 7 years ago. Started with ancients and have pretty much gone nuts from there. Not much I won't collect now.

It will make almost a year now. my dad gave me his collection of proof set and some silver. So I decide to make it grow and I will pass it down to the kids later on. The first coin I bought was 2011 maple leaf forever and the 20 for 20 canoe. I'm working on canadian ''all denomation'' set, birthyear foreign coinsets (kids, wife and mine)and some NCLT and some silver

On my first trip back to my Birthplace (London, England), I ran into a group of Canadian soldiers on the tube (my brother was wearing a shirt that said Canada).. They introduced themselves and we talked for a while about Afganistan (where they were deployed) and Canada... And when we were about to leave their sargeant gave me and my brother three Saudi Arabian (I think) coins That was 9 years ago... And I have been collecting ever since! Recently I have stepped up collecting due to my, abiet short, move back to England (we didn't have time to start to ship our stuff when we learned that we are moving back) and me being at the Olympic games!! Just like you, I collect foreign coins, although I do have a small older Canadian collection that was given to me by my Grandfather... Afternote; due to the coins being in one of my boxes, I don't have access until tomorrow (Third Move in the same number of months)

Thanks for all the posts, guys! It interests me to see how everybody got started! I just got back from a trip to England myself to visit my boyfriend, it was a 7 week visit and I loved it! I was able to purchase a few foreign coins from an antique shop that I probably wouldn't have gotten in the states :)

I have been serious about coin collecting about 6 years ago ....... I was searching the net and I found CCF.... started lurking for a couple of days and then decided to join the family I searched for my childhood coin collection and started posting pics (they were all Egyptian coins). Dont know how this happened but I started collecting US coins ..... trading to have one of each type and it ended up with collecting US coins by date and mint mark

Started my first set of Lincoln cents in 1957. Those coins are long gone.

My grandfather stoked my interest in coins from the time I could walk. (very early 70s) The first coin I remember that was explained to me as a collector's item was a Franklin half. Certainly nothing valueable, especially for the time, but good enough for a pre-schooler. Been doing it ever since. About 40 years.

When I was 12ish, my grandmother gave me many coins she had saved, to give me when she thought I was of a responsible age (mistake!). Of those, I recall a beautiful BU Standing Liberty quarter, can't remember the year - I traded that to a another carrier friend for 50 of his customers (Quincy Patriot Ledger). I also recall a cool blue 1893 Columbian Exposition half dollar, that I had to spend on the Boston subway to get home - toll guy was very happy to take it! Also, in the late 50's, early 60's, the Boston Jordan Marsh store had a very large coin section on the 1st floor, lots of display cases in an open floor setting - I would go in there and buy those beauties whenever I could scrape up a few dollars, but being bad with money, I didn't keep them long, and then when I was old enough to own a car, everything was gone. Started up again in the early 90's, a little bit of everything U.S. After working for 50+ years, I finally have a few dollars to spend, so I can buy, and not sell! Plus the occasional gift from family.

Since 1964. 1916 Barber dime from circulation. Fifth Generation Coin Collector. I was lucky enough to grow up in/near San Francisco and collected my first set of Lincolns completely from circulation; with one exception, the 1914 D. My Uncle had an upholstery shop and I got to rip the bottoms out of the chairs and couches that were brought in. One day in 1967 a woman brought in a couch she had owned for over 50 years. There was a very nice selection of 'S" mint coins; including pennies from 1908 to about 1926. I think that reflected the years her children were still at home; as coins from other years were spotty at best. The oldest? An 1877 CC Dime.
