It ends tonight around 2000 hrs CST. NGC MS61, it would have fit right in with my gold page which are MS61's...all one of them...so far.

What a splendiferous coin. The crack would be a very strong magnifier of interest for me.

that is why I said crack instead of break, there needs to be some separation before it is considered a break and if this was a break the whole design would have feel in half after this coin was struck (which probably happened not to far after this coin was struck because that is a good size crack that goes from one side to the other)

Crazy die crack on that gold. Kinda surprised that can even happen, given that gold is so soft. Must of been at the very end of the 252,923 mintage.

Die cracks seen in gold coins are relativelly scarcer than for other metals , because gold is softer and the dies tended to be used for striking fewer coins anyway, to retain the sharpness of the strike, for most issues.

I just saw this thread and I ended up winning this coin. I was willing to go considerably higher - as die cracks go, this one was pretty exciting. Sorry oih82w8, we apparently both love gold die cracks!

Here are a couple of my favorites (apologies as my pictures aren't the best):

NGC AU53 1799 Large Stars $5 - R6+ (~14-18 exist)

No apologies needed SmallEagle. I thought (silly me) that this would not attract much attention...was I wrong! I was just looking for slabbed 7070 coins for my gold "page" and thought that I would share with the CCF. This one was the first "die crack" that I have seen on a gold piece, although I just started looking for gold last month. Nice coin and congrats!

SmallEagle that first coin is amazing and even though the second one is a nice one as well I don't believe I have ever seen anything like the first one on a Gold coin before. I have seen similar on silver but never gold

Thanks! Neither had I, nor any of the dealers I've shown it to. There were three people going up against this one at auction and I wasn't about to let it go easy... I ended up paying AU58 money for an AU53 coin but I like it far too much.

Thanks! That one was actually a cherrypick at the most recent ANA show. I already had an AU50 CAC example of the 1808/7 BD-2 (an R4 coin) but I saw this R6 variety in the case of a friend of mine and he was willing to trade it for my example with a bit of cash on top, at a fraction over his cost.

Very interesting die cracks on all of the gold coins pictured. I would not either buy or pay a premium for a coin with such a prominent die crack as to me it is too much of a distraction. Great conversation pieces though.
