biokemist6, this is why I love you guys so much . I had bad Intel and read 47K. The 1.47 million makes a huge difference. That would also explain the huge range in sold prices. I'll just leave it as is and maybe send it in for grading when I get my next group of free slab & grading. I apreciate all of the help.

I have one in my Dansco Roosevlet Album, one 1996 set and I just sold another set for $15 on ebay. Because people don't always know about the dime, you can pick up cheap, like you did. Nice! Many times you will see them on ebay without the W dime, so be careful when you research prices.

Depends on your definition of "doing well on ebay" is. From what I see, slabbed selling between $15 and $23.50.

Is it just the low mintage that makes the 96-w sell at a premium or something else ? I just wanna learn, thanks.

BUuncirculated, ebay prices, like on most sales, tend to be all over the place. Some of the higher ones are listed below. ebay: sold 1996-W Roosevelt dime NGC MS68 FB FT 2ND FINEST REGISTRY MS68 254.15 ebay: sold 1996 W ICG MS 69 DIME MS69 130.00 ebay: sold 1996-W ICG MS69 Roosevelt dime , WHITE MS69 102.51 ebay: sold 1996 W Roosevelt dime NGC MS 68 MS68 75.00 And there are sales of them selling on the lower end of the spectrum too. But these tend to be in the MS65 and MS66 grade. No guarantees on me getting a better grade if I send it in. Another risk factor. I know that it's a crap shoot as to what one sells for on ebay. Nothing is etched in stone. I'll just wait for the next time I re-enlist with PCGS and use the dime as one of my free grades. I'm in no hurry to grade it and I'm in no hurry to sell it. I appreciate everybodies input.

Quote: My question is: If you had this coin, would you send it in for grading or keep it in the sealed wrapper from the mint? Mine is in the clad dime hole in my 7070. I think it's the lowest mintage of any clad coin, isn't it?

I know I have mentioned it before in another thread on here but a few years ago I went on a buying spree and bought quite a few of these mint sets with the W dime in them. I think I ended up with something like 30 or 40 sets of them before I got burnt out on them. I do this allot when I get my sights set on something my OCD kicks in and before I know it I am swamped with that particular item. That being said I never sent any in to be graded, I still have all of them in the sets

the 1996-W will start to go way up in value in the future IMO. Albums are starting to more regularly include them as a slot. As soon as Dansco puts out all albums, including the business strike and clad-proof, with the slot everybody will need one. Right now Dansco already has it in their clad+silver proof album.
Other companies are starting to include it as well. 10 years ago, I'm not sure if a single album had a slot for it. Go with where demand will increase.

I like your reasoning. That does makes sense but the mintage is a little on the high side. Only time will tell.

Yes every collector of Roosevelt dimes will need one. Problem is there is nowhere close to 1.4 million Roosevelt dime collectors. So will be plenty to go around, and they will all be MS. Not a good formula for continuing value appreciation. Kind of like the 1973 P & D Ike dollars. Every album has the holes and it is a completed series. But 34 years after the coin ended those two "keys" are still lackluster. Or the 50-D nickel. 2.2 million and the holders have had a slot for that one since day one. But after 62 years it can still be purchased for less than it was 50 years ago. Why? Because there aren't 2 milliom Jefferson nickel collectors and there are plenty to go around.

I'm not implying that it's value is going to triple in 5 years or anything like that, but it will go up considerably if it becomes a part of the set that everyone needs to complete.
Keep in mind, we're talking about "change in demand." The coin already has a certain value at it's present level of demand and if that changes, so will it's value. The reason for this and the reason it's different than the 50-D, is because the 50-D never had a change in demand. All those coins were hoarded from the get go. Many people don't even know the 96-W exists. All of them are in the hands of dealers. The 50D never went up in value because nobody ever needed to buy one (back in the day).
1.4 million is large enough to limit this coin from ever being really expensive. You could probably pick it up in average UNC condition for about $10. If Dansco includes holes for it in every album, I see an immediate jump to about $15. I also see a steady rise after that.
