I have just been looking at some Krause photo grading standards, to quote, in part: "VG 8 (very good)The coin will show considerable wear, with most detail points worn nearly smooth". Compared to the standard photo gradings, this coin seems to me to be between VG-8 and F-12. I am still looking for a seated reasonable Seated dollar. I know I have set myself a difficult task. Almost all Seated dollars saw very heavy and extended use in circulation.

If that coin is genuine, you got a good deal for $249. It has almost XF detail and even if it's cleaned, it would be worth $249. Look at the hair just above the ear, it's one of the highest points on Seated dollars and is generally flat on VF20 pieces. That coin still has detail there pushing it to VF30 minimum. The coin should weigh 26.7 grams, be 38.1 mm in diameter, and be non-magnetic! The earlier prices I quoted were for a different date (the one in the title).

I'd think it might go VF25 at a top TPG, nice coin for a good price too! Hopefully in hand it is as nice and not a net details coin.

Best of luck, hope that it's as authentic as you want it to be. Keep in mind there is always the return policy, hope your seller has one attached to his auction.

Even if he doesn't, you can always return through ebay buyer protection but be VERY careful to use it correctly or you could get messed up. Signature confirmation, etc. I almost got scammed out of $500 once from taking a risk on bad pictures...I knew it was about 50/50, but if I had not used signature confirmation I would have lost a lot of money.

Looking at the PCGS PhotoGrade website I think it would make a VF25 as long as the reverse is better than the pics.

Its a strong strike with a high amount of wear as opposed to a weak strike with a low amount of wear; that can sometimes give the illusion of a higher grade.

So it arrived today. Can't wait to get home to open it. I'll post later on what I find. This may be a dumb question, but do you use anything specific to measure the diameter of the coin?

A good set of calipers would be best, but there are workarounds. If you want to know if it's within tolerances and don't have calipers, use a ruler and draw two parallel lines on a piece of paper using a ruler and lay the coin between the lines (poor man's calipers)

My impression is VF-20. But due to the lack of details in the scans you posted, my opinion could go higher seeing it in hand.
I agree. You got a good deal.

I see the completed ebay auction and seller is a major online coin dealer with thousands of positive feedbacks. I would still verify weight/diameter/magnetism and have a coin expert view it in-hand if possible. I'm 90% sure it's genuine but you never know these days. I also see they had graded it VF/XF and that looks like what it is. Even a cleaned example is worth the $249 you paid.

So it passed the magnet test. I went to my local coin shop. It was in the Weight Tolerance, was the right diameter, had proper wear, and even made the silver ring when lightly dropped. We think it may have been cleaned lightly at some point and definitely has slight damage in wing, but overall we confident it was authentic. It is a fine VF to XF example for my 7070 and is in similiar grade range as rest of my coins. thanks to all for advice and comments!
