Thank you for the responses! I promised my friend I would talk to his friend (who is not a dealer, but a collector and he swears by him) - so today I found another option!

If I do go with Great Collections - I feel confident it will be fine. Thank you.

My dad gave these coins to me and some to my sister. He recently passed away, but wanted us to sell them when the price of gold began to rise. They are very neat to hold - a part of history! My dad, actually kept pestering me to sell them as my sister already sold hers. Now the timing is right.

Thanks again - I know where to come for my questions - I'm sure I'll be back to ask some more. I've already learned a bit about coin collecting from researching my coins. A very cool hobby! God Bless! Linda

Coin Community also offers a sales service. (our host here!!)

I would look at what the fees are and past auction prices realized to make my decision.

ABSOLUTELY send insured AND signature required.

Thank you - if I mail them I will definitely do that. Here's my dilemma - maybe the members here can help me decide. I spoke with my friend's friend. His name is Pete. Pete is a collector, but also sells coins/gold/silver for people. He is going to a coin show mid November and is willing to take my coins to sell. He said he would take a 5% or 10% commission. He said he can probably get close to the prices on the greysheet/bluesheet.

Online, Great Collections, takes a 0% commission on coins over $1000 and 5% on coins under a $1000 (those are the sellers fees). Also, I could pay them to grade the ungraded coins and possibly get more money in the long run. I also feel from people bidding on items I might get more for them. Also, I can watch my coins online.

What do you all think? Money is tight (I'm sure everyone is feeling the same these days)...... Help! Linda

First of all be weary of a friend of a friend.
Secondly most true collectors would simply buy your coins from you.
Do some more research and you will know exactly what your coins are worth and what to expect for them.
Sure old mate will flog em off at a coin show for 5-10% commission when they are not the real owner of the coins, Any profit without an investment is a win to these people.
Bryan1315 gave you some sound advice and I personaly would listen to him

trout1105 - thank you, my gut is telling me to try the online, like you said my friend's friend - doesn't have the investment in this like I do - and I can just see people bargaining - online you really can't do that!

I am going to send a couple of coins at a time - this way it's not all at once and see how they sell. I think I'll send 2 of the St Gaudens as they seem popular. If they do well, then I'll send out the Pandas........

I'll let all of you know how I make out. Thank you again! Linda

Make a list of coin, mintmark, grade by slabbing company.....and post here. Would imagine the members here can give you a very good opinion on price to be realized.

You don't sound like your in a hurry to sell those coins so here is my advice or suggestions.
Do not take chances on the mail system. Usually works but then you never know. I never heard of that place you mentioned but then too there are possibly hundreds or more on line dealers. Some may have just started and some have been around for a long time. Regardless, you still don't know. There are coin stores and pawn shops all over the country but usually they will try to get you to sell for a fraction of real value. AND be carefull of friends telling you what to do since most have no or little experience in what they say.
IF there are any coin shows in your area, I'd say try there first. Usually a lot of dealers so you can get some decent offers. Normally no fees for parking or admittance. Also, no insurances, no postage, no lost in mail, etc. Try looking up coin shows on Google for your state and/or area.

A friend of a friend is still a stranger

If you want to sell them in person do it yourself or use ebay or one of the reputable online auction sites. Dont just hand them off to a friend of a friend who could either take off with the coins or sell them for significantly more than he tells you they sold for

I agree. Especially when you do not know how strong or weak that friendship is.

Another good idea - that is what the friend of the friend was going to do - take the coins to a coin show. Much to ponder over.... The coins have been sitting in my safe for such a long time, but I am finally ready to sell them.

Anyway here is my list:

1917 Mckinley G$1 PCGS MS65

1916-S St Gaudens G$20 PCGS MS64
1914-D St Gaudens G$20 PCGS MS64

Complete set of gold Pandas - 1998 5 coins - the big ones have
certificates ANICS MS65

1880 - G$10 - Numismatic guaranty corporation of America MS60

1861 - G$1 - PCGS MS60

Booker T Washington half dollar (1946?)

Columbian half dollar -1492-1898 - Columbian Exposition

39 Presidentas of the US 200 year commemorative coin (1789-1989)

POW Silver Dollar Proof Coin

Proof sets 1987, 1990, 1989

Uncirculated sets - 1989, 1990,1987,1988, 1964 (Philadelphia mint)

1979 Susan B Anthony dollar souvenir set (3 coins)

1886-1986 Statue of Liberty Centenial Coins (.99 pure silver)

1909 Indian Head penny

1908 G$10

1928 Liberty $1

I actually had 2 valuable coins stolen (a family member for drugs) - broke my heart - thus I bought a big safe. The 2 coins were my favorites -

Oh well, that is the past.

I know my dad paid a lot for the McKinely - more than it's value now - wondering if he was over-charged - or was it more valued in the past?

Linda

1916-S St Gaudens G$20 PCGS MS64 $2720
1914-D St Gaudens G$20 PCGS MS64 $2440

1880 - G$10 - Numismatic guaranty corporation of America MS60 $1190

1861 - G$1 - PCGS MS60 $425

1908 G$10 There are several types and mintmarks - price starts at $1200...and goes UP!

Check the reverse for a Mintmark - is there an "S"? 1909 Indian Head penny

I do not see any mintmarks on the penny. From my little bit of research I believe it is the large princess head (probably more common)?

The 1908 G$10 is an Indian Head.

Thanks for the values - I was estimating a little lower on the St, Gaudens - so this really helps. Linda
