A lot of my Canadian coin purchases are from the local coin store because the store is only a hop skip and a jump from my place. Gary, my local coin dealer, is very nice and I will usually end up staying for a few hours just talking to him if he isn't too busy. I do buy a fair amount from the internet but I make more purchases person to person. I get quite a few of my coins from coin roll hunting so maybe that should be another option.

I buy everything on ebay except 2x2 cardboard flips. Most of the stuff the one dealer we have in town carries are: 1: out of my price range 2: overpriced (compared to what you can get on ebay) 3: not a wide selection 4: Too far of a drive to be convenient and go a couple of times a week 5: He is not the most friendly guy I have ever met, which is odd because all of his money comes from in store customers. Maybe if there were some more (larger) dealers in town I would, but right now its not worth it. Edited by noahs-numismatics

Brick and mortar for me. Sometimes a show, but in general if it's not in my hand I can't really judge the coin's condition.

Online. Mostly ebay. If there's a problem then it's covered. Some great deals to be found if you put in the time. Plus I can shop for what I want, when I want. Hard to find a coin shop open between 23:00 and 02:00! Plus no HST if you're buying privately. Edited by kuh_85

How about all of the above? For me, mostly ebay, but also brick and mortar stores, coin shows (there is one tomorrow in Vancouver at Oakridge) and auctions on iCollector. |

I'm all ebay. I wish that there was a coin shop in my town, Kingston Ontario, but there isn't. You would think that Kingston being one of the oldest cities in this part of Canada that someone would fill the vacuum and open up a shop in town. I mean come on! Kingston is the home of Canada's first prime minister and was also the capital of Canada of a short while. I bet there are a lot of nice old coins sitting in people's basements because they don't know what to do with them, or were to take them to find out any information about them. In fact I don't think there is a coin shop located within 75 km of Kingston. Edited by barriecarson

I went to the Oakridge coin show last year in Spetember, had a blast! Cosest coin show to home.
Won't be able to make it this year, too much going on and the roads are too bad.

My answer would be, "none of the above". I buy most coins for my collection(s) at coin shows and coin auctions. My last several big purchases, a coin dealer would either phone me, or pull me aside at a coin show and say, "I got something you might want to see..."

I actually do alot of my buying from obscure cities in the US when I travel for work. My best finds were silver dollars for 14 dollars a piece and an 1859 large cent which I had ICCS graded EF40 for 4 dollars. Also found some complete penny collection 1920-1972 for 60 bucks each. Some of the best places are those antique malls in the middle of nowhere! I love the hunt for good deals!

I've bought a lot on ebay but lately I've joined a coin club. I'm leaning toward buying from my fellow hobbier. I prefer the real contact with the sellers or traders. |

Sort of an unfair question - either or. Where do you prefer to shop? is the better question, and by far, I prefer the brick and mortar mom&pop coin shop.
But, like mentioned above the shops are not open between 11pm and 2am while I am whiling my time away on night shift. Then, it is - Back to the 'Bay'.
