I have a question on how to read population numbers for rare varieties. Specifically, I don't know how to read the population for superlatives. PCGS maintains a separate coin page and population for superlatives. For example, there will be a page for 1943-P 5¢ Doubled Die Obverse and then a separate page for 1943-P 5¢ Doubled Die Obverse FS (Full Steps).

Does the MS population entry include the FS population?

i.e. if the MS population is 22 and the FS population is 6, does that mean there are 28 total coins? or does that mean the MS "not FS" population is actually 16, and the total number of coins is 22?

By using your example I always thought 28 would be the total, but that's only the way I figured it.....

That's what I had originally assumed. But then I noticed that the number in each FS bin apparently never exceeds the MS bin. That's not terribly surprising, but I also noticed that some of the auction results listed in the price reference logs for MS are the FS coins.

It's also entirely possible that they just do historical price links that way, and it has nothing to do with the actual population numbers.
