A couple areas like the head, breast, shoulder, knee, and some of the feathers are slightly flat and have a dark silver color which I think indicates wear. From the pictures, the luster that I do see is generally hugging the most protected of areas. Unless there is more luster that is not shown in the pictures, I don't think I could grade it much higher. Since you say it is in a OGH, my guess is it got graded EF-45. It could possibly grade AU-50 today.
From what I've heard, coins in the green holder were graded more conservatively than today but most of the ones that are worth getting regraded already have. It is my feeling that most of green holders still left on the market are either correctly graded, overgraded, or not worth getting regraded like the morgans mentioned by dave700x.

I would also go with AU53 (with the understanding an OGH could end up lower = EF45). Nice!! (Is it wrong to want every Seated Liberty half dollar I see anyone post?)

Quote: I see a lot of MS63 Morgans that look MS64 and usually exceed MS63 money.(as compared to current slabs that is) dave700x, Funny you should bring up Morgans in older green labels. The other coin I got in this trade was a CC Morgan with the green label. I'll have this one on board to show in the very near future.

Not my series, but before seeing all of the posts, I was going to say the reverse is AU58/MS63 depending on the luster, and the obverse AU50. So, I will say 53.

Joining in I will say AU 53 based on the photographs. I have one of these coins I would call XF 45 to AU 50. Yours has a much stronger reverse strike but a lesser observe comparing to mine. A great type coin for your collection.

babystr, Good call. I wish you were wrong and it was an AU55 or AU58. I will not do a 'break out' for regrade.

The muted luster is what holds it back. It's easy to forget that of the four primary factors for grading mint state coins (strike, luster, contact marks, and eye appeal) luster is generally the most important. As a coin starts to show wear (dropping into the AU range) the luster is progressively diminished. The amount of luster that remains is the primary determinant of which AU grade applies.
The OP's coin has excellent remaining detail, nearly MS on the reverse and choice AU on the obverse. However, only traces of luster remain visible around the stars and legend. This "defect" might be the result of circulation or from an old, too-vigorous dipping. Either way, in my opinion the minimal luster is what justifies the AU-50 grade.
