I plan to be looking for old coins in the ground until I get too old and go in the ground myself, but if you want to take up metal detecting, I have a caveat or two: [list] It takes a lot of time and effort to find coins dating before the 20th Century. [list] Once you dig one old silver coin from the ground, there's no going back! I got these Silver Spanish reales during a day-long outing this past June. It was one of my best days ever; the finds just kept coming - 1748 & 1750 one-real coins and a 1774 two-reales coin, early coppers, etc. All found in a empty field offering no clues to its past until you get into the ground. Even better, the house that stood on the property was owned be a wealthy merchant, who presented himself as a die-hard patrtiot, yet he was a double-agent selling secrets to the British Army. How cool is that? It rained on and off that day while I was detecting, but I didn't care. At the end of the day, I think I probably slept with a smile on my face. Best Regards to All        |

Best to start new threads with this great stuff. No one can tell from the thread title that these coins are here! Though they're British issues, I do believe they belong in this forum, as coins that we know were circulating in the American colonies.

North of Williamsburg, Virginia (I believe the area is known as Lightfoot) I found, what I believe to be, a French Militia camp site from 1781. In this site I found 3 Virginia half pennies from 1773. I believe many were being paid with these coins. I'll have a new thread showing these coins later today. Congrats on the Oak Tree. When it comes to detecting, that is what we live for.

Not bad. You need to join this group: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/colonial-coins/Tell them John Lorenzo sent you and post away ... It's important to include any George II or George III copper halfpence coppers if you find any with the city and state. Their "FIND LOCATIONS" is important to some researchers. |

Amazing find! My son has wanted to go metal detecting - unfortunately we are surrounded by swamps so I can only IMAGINE what stuff would look like.

I wish I could have a chance at finding this stuff metal detecting, too bad I live on the wrong side of the country.  Good thing we have S and CC coins over here.  Too bad I don't have a metal detector though... I need to fix that... Edited by Omegaraptor
