Coin Chick you grossly underestimate how much a geologist can drink. Although I do prefer beer, but 10 beers in just means I am just pulling up to the starting line...

My late aunt, who worked her entire career with the US Geological Survey, was a beer drinker. Never quite understood that until now.

kijiji2012. no one was being rude, please, if you're going to be calling people rude, you can turn around and get the heck off this website, you're dealing with some of the top collectors in Canada, even North America, if you're going to come here for advice, take the advice and thank us, but by treating us like crap, makes you look bad here.

I missed this thread when it started, but I can tell you for sure after 44 years of being a roofing contractor that those marks are made by an Estwing hammer. I could duplicate that coin in seconds. With that said I think Kijij2012 should post any error he's not sure of on this forum. No matter what. As long as we all stay civil it makes a great read and pulls the community together.

I can understand and empathize with the emotional responses of this thread. The issue of fabrications is damaging to the hobby but is taken lightly by authorities â€" for them, it is "just" defacing â€" a minor inconvenience. Only angry reactions from the collecting community seem to work. The "funny" thing is that we see angry reactions not only from sellers but also from buyers when they are told their coins are just a PMD.

Error coins are fascinating but the learning curve is steep and expensive. I have a 300+ collection of fabrications â€" for some of them I paid A LOT, just to realize they were fakes. Other coins in this collection I got as gift from other collectors and dealers (yes! Dealers gave me coins for free â€" some silver â€" just for the educational value of it). I have a few made by myself or made "to order" by someone else who have the tools. I met some "artists" including one who manufactured coins currently in NGC holders.

I used to carry the collections to shows and club meetings but probably will stop doing it â€" nobody is interested in learning. I used to give my opinion at shows but grew tired of being yelled, threatened, and bullied by dealers and collectors involved in the trades of these fabrications.

I know how you feel t_y. I am less compelled to comment on errors and fabrications, after having Canada's "Error Expert" cut and paste my critisim about a fabricated coin and my comments here on CCF in Canadian Coin News.

I am still, and always, eager to help error collectors, but less so in a public forum. I provide advice to Canada's best auction house (in my opinion) and the better dealers come to me at shows - so I know my opinion is valued.

I think your fabrication collection is fascinating - it should be properly documented and photographed - because it would be a very useful reference. But - I guess it takes an error collector to fully appreciate it.

PS - 3000th post....

I am new here and I am selling a lot of my dad's coins on e-bay. if there is something I'm not sure about I will be listing it here FIRST then putting it on e-bay. Then I will also actually look like I know what I'm doing.

It's always good to consult a professional. There are people in this forum that have forgotten more about coins than I will ever know.

I say "Hail to the professionals on this forum" You provide an invaluable service!

I am but a sponge, ready to soak up the waterfall of knowledge here.

(ok I'm being a little dramatic but it's all in fun)

T_y or SPP are there any links to this collection of fakes? Iam very interested 110% in learning to tell the difference between real and fake. This to me is all new as like most people I know they fake bills but until a couple months ago I didn't know they faked coins until I read about fake toonies here in the forum. But fake errors being sold, this I need to beware of. Loosing money to buy a fake must have been a huge let down T_Y, but with a silver lining mind you, your knowledge of this now puts you miles ahead of all of us who don't know.

I do not have any photographic equipment (excuse #1) nor the ability to take a decent pic (excuse #2), so, no online album or publication. Adding insult to injury, I am the laziest writer in the world (that lead to the only significant contribution I made to humanity: creating some coding shortcuts).

... but in the last 10 days, I added 6 new coins to my collection ...

The latest issue (September) of the CN Journal has a good photo of a Montreal Mint twoonie, on page 409. Another good reason to be a member of the RCNA.

Iam looking forward to joining RCNA in the new year. I spent a lot of time on the site yesterday and yes that's for me, love it. I also spent a lot of time looking up fakes and how there made, some of them are quite technical. I discovered a very good video "Secrets of the US Mint" the last half is all about errors and fakes. For the people that haven't seen this vid I recommend it. You won't be disappointed.
