I don't know what a common hackers metal detector is but yes an experienced metal detectorist with a decent metal detector would be able to give you a pretty good guess to whether its gold or not. Forget jewelers and cash converters, Not sure what state your in but someone like ABC Bullion in Sydney or Cashforoldgold in Melbourne have the equipment to test this for you without damaging the coin, Take the coin in and I'm sure they would be happy to help, When you have such an unusual item you will find most people happy to help out if they can.

I was just making the point to use a gold bullion company and not a hock shop or a jewellery. I'm in sydney so I used examples of places I know and use.I wasn't specifically telling him to use those places just pointing him in the right direction. Its a simple question, Gold or not? can be worked out very easy and quickly by going to the right place first. http://www.google.com.au/#hl=en&tbo...w.r_qf.&fp=b987864691354c7e&biw=1920&bih=938

And clearly that weight is within the expected tolerance for a production proof.
Congratulations on the find!

Well done. The weight is much more accurate now.
Where exactly did you get it weighed the first time? I'm going there to sell my gold if their scales are off by 4 grams lol

Congratulations on this great find! Worth noting that there are coins like this out there waiting to be noodled!
About 4 months ago I walked into a local bank and asked if they had any round 50 cent pieces. Right time - right place. I walked out with $23 face value of 1966 50 cent pieces. At that stage they were selling for around $12 each! 46 coins! Cost me $23. Certainly worth asking about at your local bank!

Assuming its a $4 bag of 20c and theyre all wavy baseline and UNC theres probably $50,000 of value there. Are you sure they are all wavy baseline?

I didn't think that bags came out until the 1980s, it was always paper RAM rolls? But then again I've been wrong about 87 times so far this week.

Typical tolerances (particularly precious metals) tend to be within 2%. Figures in the vicinity of 20% tend to be in the realm of BS or seriously dodgy scales...

You are certainly having some luck with amazing coin findings Shanew A bag of 1966 wavy's sounds incredible ! It would be great if you could take some photo's of one of the wavy rolls when next you visit your mate's dad. Cos' "a picture is worth a thousand words" And I for one would love to see it... Squire
