Any referral or advice would be welcomed Fred, Whatever venue you go with I would suggest that you stick with either PCGS or NGC slabbed coins especially when purchasing gold and other high dollar coins. This way you are much less likely to get stuck with a problem coin or a counterfeit and you have some idea of the grade of the coin although grading companies are not perfect. It may be best to find a reputable dealer although their prices may be higher since they know what they are selling and have the clientele to get top prices for their items. |

Thanks Joe2007 Appears that ebay and craigslist are out, have noticed the scamming and frauds that take place (please see my other postings). I am yet hesistant to start shopping with a dealer for price considerations only. I would like to try to maximize coin purchase/dollar spent ratio and will yet explore a few other venues. Perhaps estate sales or auctions but I wouldnt really know where to begin there. Thanks again for any insight |

Buy some books and research the internet before you shell out large sums. ebay can be brilliant if you know your subject. I search for unpublished varieties which I'm aware of and scooped a few beauties. Where else is there a 24/7 coin shop? |

All that I have seen there is every one thinking they can pull maximum value for their stuff. Can't knock them for it but it makes it very difficult to get a "deal" on anything. Thanks Peter1234 and Kurrykid, any thoughts on avenues of exploration are always welcomed. I am mostly interested now in gold yet not too well prepared on gold, but I am pretty up on most other U.S. post colonial issue things, have all the price guides, and copies of Overton, Briggs, and Bollender and even have the links for VAM diagnostics when trying to ascribe die and die state. They are no shield, however, when up against the likes of the pro scammers like "eternitycoin" and "centsles" and who knows what other entrenched ebay fraudsters lie in wait. How are they still in business if everyone knows what they do, as it so appears after reading postings here? |

If you're interested in gold, check out this publication from US Gold Bureau. I am lucky enough to have a very reputable dealer as a friend. We also have a local coin club here, and there are two part time dealer and two full time dealers there I fully trust. Of course, I also know of several full time and part time dealers that I wouldn't give 25 cents for Kennedy half. I like coin shows also. An enjoyable time with good finds and great buys possible. I have purchased on ebay, heritage, etc also. I am not as lucky there as some of our other members. There are certainly deals to be had there and other places with sufficient patience. |

Thank you linxlvr and, again, Kurrykid I am mostly looking at smaller gold, and think I will avoid shows for the short term after coming up empty in November as a solo venture in a long time. TPG census numbers seem a good indication of true rarity, and generally fall in line relatively with mintage figures. And if referring to the modern issue eagles, it seems they are overpriced in relation to classic rarities vis-a-vis actual availability. Even the low mintage 2007W and 2008W fractionals, even nominally 100's of times more available, are even then wholly populated at the upper extreme of grading. Looking at some pre-Civil War era quarter eagles by comparison, entire extant populations are way under even the meager mintages of those West Point mintages |

My greatest finds have come from flea markets and garage/yard sales. At garage/yard sales the most important thing is to ASK. People just don't like to put out coins, stamps, guns, etc at those. You have to ASK. Many times if you do ask you might hear yes I've got an old jar full of coins. You really just have to ASK.

I forgot about a local coin shop we have in Nashville called the coin purse check it out they have some of their stuff listed online on there site.

Perhaps,s yard-sales can be great but be careful though. Someone had an American silver eagle, it was all black they wanted 20 bucks. That was back in 2010.
