This '85-CC could have been put in that pendant decades ago.

The coin looks authentic to me. It has been harshly cleaned (polished), so if you just have to put an 1885-CC Morgan in a pendant, this would be the coin to pick.

Good news here is that it looks like the coin could be removed without damage. Notice there are no denticle or rim dings. Then you have a polished '85-CC for $350, a decent deal for both buyer and seller.

Suggestion: Send it to ANACS. Worth a Details slab just to verify it's genuine.

I don't see any obvious signs that it's a counterfeit. People can and do put better-date coins in jewelry (I have a "mount-removed" 1844-D quarter eagle to prove it!). This dollar has about AU detail and a glossy look consistent with having been polished which is what you expect from coin jewelry.

Retail price for an original AU 1885-CC is in the $500 ballpark so an asking price of $350 for this damaged piece isn't a drastic discount. Unless there is significant additional precious metal value for this lot I don't think I would be tempted. If you want this date for your coin collection I recommend you choose a problem-free example for a little more money.

In 1963 that was a $55 coin in BU, less in lightly circulated, but you could still find them in circulation by going through bags of dollars from the bank. So this coin could have very easily been "just another dollar" when it was put into the bezel.

I might call $350 an "incredible" price for this coin, but I wouldn't be using the term in a complimentary fashion.

Your typical garden variety " Morgan dollar in a pendant". It was done all the time years ago...pendants, belt buckles, the list goes on and on.

Buyer beware...I personally wouldn't touch this with a 10 foot pole. There are no super deals "out there". Generally speaking.

SsuperDdave,

Don't forget, you're getting, included for free, a fabulous bezel ring too.

If it is genuine, that poor thing must have been polished to a shine once in its life.

I agree with polished to within an inch of it's life, looks okay other than that, I would probably pass on the deal though. if you do look at it, don't purchase the coin until you have checked the edges for a seam, that would mean removing the bezel to see it.

I met a guy back in the 1980's who had a 1921 Peace dollar in one of those over sized belt buckles. I asked him if he knew the coin had a premium over most other Peace dollar dates and he said he did and that he bought the coin, in uncirculated condition, expressly to put it into that buckle because it was a 1921. He didn't care about ruining the numismatic value of the coin he was proud of the fact he was wearing this scarce dollar.

When and whether the person who mounted this CC dollar into this bezel we'll never know if the person knew it was a CC, didn't care or put it in because it was a CC dollar. I suppose we could ask the coin but Miss Liberty's lips are sealed.

Problem-free XF's are $500 minimum, so XF details for $350 (polished is probably still better than bent, rim dings, etc.), someone would buy it.

Talk about a perfect coin to pocket-piece!
