That is a tough call.  with vermontensium that there are the remmants of the serifs of the S however the S looks very wide. I would say that this should be a pass unless you get it for a ridiculously low price so if it is not authentic, it would be a good conversation piece of the fish that got away. |

I'm really not an expert, but I have to agree to pass on this. It just has too much damage and is such a low grade. Plus the authenticity is not clear. Save your money for another day.

Thanks everyone. I took a chance (couldn't resist) and put a low ball bid on this coin and did end up winning it for a "ridiculously low price". Including BP I paid $6.60. Either I got a super good deal or I'm out the price of breakfast in the morning :)

 For $6.60 I would have taken the chance as well (and I am extremely conservative). When you get it, please post updated pictures. From the pictures you posted, it also looked as if it was struck off center. I wonder if it really is - that might explain the wider S. Holy moly, I am crossing my fingers on this one! |

6.60 is not much to gamble with. Getting to examine the coin in hand may be a good learning experience, at the least.

I'd pay $6.60 even if it were no doubt a fake. :-)
But aye, by the *pictures* I'd lean genuine but a lot of damage.. a lot a lot.
In-hand examination might go in either direction.

I have other business near the auction house so will be picking it up in person on Monday. When that happens I'll take some better pictures, weigh it, do the magnet test etc., and post the results. Thanks again everyone.

I got the coin home today. At 4.96 grams, the weight was a little less than it should be but I'm thinking wear might account for it being slightly (.04 grams) out of spec. Diameter and thickness both tested fine and it did not stick to a magnet. It looks more genuine in hand than pictures can convey, but I've included a couple of enlargements of areas that were mentioned as questionable.   Edited by Peter4805

4.96 grams is well within spec. Spec is 5 grams +/- .194 grams so it would not be low weight until less than 4.806 grams

If you feel it looks more genuine in hand then I believe it is most likely genuine. Congratulations on a great pick up!

Very nice find. You can send it in to see if it's real. It looks right but the S is kind of odd.

I would have probably paid up to $15 or so for your coin, it looks good to me, just PMD. These nickels went through alot. I just picked up a raw '12-S in good from a dealer in December for $120 - and I felt like I got a good deal with that! |
