Thanks Trout and AustCoin ;-)
Yes, it's always nice to have a coin (three in this case) that people don't think exist!
one happy camper here :-)

Very nice! Congratulations!

How long did it take you to put the set together?

@Robster - next project, still deciding ;-) but for now I have all the 50c's I want (except a few of the gold issues which are more about cash constraints rather than anything else, and by cash constraints I mean the constraints from the missus on coins in general ;-)

@commems - approximately 5 years - the first 9 are easy, it's the last three that are the challenge!

Well done Steve!

Now we can pose the question. Which 50 cent Australian legal tender coin is currently the rarest by mintage alone?

I wonder how many CCF members will know the answer!

Cheers

Why do the last three coins 'not exist'?

I would have though some of the gold issues would have very low mintagw numbers. The heritage round 50c is 400 I think but I bet theres quite a bit lower than that. I assume we're excluding fantasies/trials like 77 and 88 coa?

Congratulations!

I think you can thank the GFC for the precipitous drop in mintages for the final releases.

From a maximum mintage of 5,000 for each issue:

1999 1/2oz Proof Lunar Silver Rabbit Coin 1,081
2000 1/2oz Proof Lunar Silver Dragon Coin 1,750
2001 1/2oz Proof Lunar Silver Snake Coin 1,135
2002 1/2oz Proof Lunar Silver Horse Coin 1,464
2003 1/2oz Proof Lunar Silver Goat Coin 776
2004 1/2oz Proof Lunar Silver Monkey Coin 674
2005 1/2oz Proof Lunar Silver Rooster Coin 607
2006 1/2oz Proof Lunar Silver Dog Coin 1,281
2007 1/2oz Proof Lunar Silver Pig Coin 1,006
2008 1/2oz Proof Lunar Silver Mouse Coin 201
2009 1/2oz Proof Lunar Silver Ox Coin 474
2010 1/2oz Proof Lunar Silver Tiger Coin 396

The 2008 in particular would be very hard to come across, as there were only an additional 75 3 coin sets sold (1/2, 1 and 2 ozs)

Thanks for those mintage figures FNQ .... incredible.

That really enforces Australia Coin's comment

Well done Steve, a lovely collection!

Enworb, I can't wait for notcb to come back with a reply, very curious (there goes another cat).

Yeah, that explains it.

Steve asked me not to raise this until he had collected the remaining 3 1/2ozLunar proof series 1 coins, for fear of creating a rush on them and him missing out.

The lowest legal tender Australia coin mintage at this stage is in fact the 2008 1/2 oz Lunar Mouse coin with a mintage of 276 (201 plus 75 in the 3 coin set) closely followed by the 2006 and 2007 gold 50 cents with 300 and the 2012 Acacia gold coin (as part of the queen's Jubilee set) with 375 (335 according to the 2011/2012 annual report).

Fantasies/trials are NOT legal tender as they have not been gazetted correctly, which is a requirement of any Australian Legal tender coin, which comes under the Currency Act.

With the 2009 1/2ox lunar Ox with coming in at 561 and the 2010 1/2oz lunar Tiger at 479 you can see why he was nervous. My information sugests that most of these lunar coins (series 1, 2008, 9 and 10) ended up in Germany.

Comments?

Cheers

Thanks for that notcb (to be honest I wasn't thinking about the fact that the 1/2oz coins had a face value of 50c ..... showing my ignorance there, so perhaps curiosity won't be the cat's downfall).

Good to see that Enworb was pretty much on the money with the gold series ones!

Again, thanks all!

FNQ's mintage figures don't include the three coin sets (which FNQ points out in their post)
If you include the three coin sets the mintage figures for 1/2oz Lunar I proofs are:

Year Mintage Description
1999 1,697 Year of the Rabbit
2000 3,747 Year of the Dragon
2001 2,023 Year of the Snake
2002 1,810 Year of the Horse
2003 1,028 Year of the Goat
2004 930 Year of the Monkey
2005 900 Year of the Rooster
2006 1,668 Year of the Dog (Golden Retriever)
2007 1,339 Year of the Pig
2008 277 Year of the Mouse
2009 561 Year of the Ox
2010 479 Year of the Tiger

@notcb - Peter, the latest figures from PM say that the mouse was actually 202 + 75 rather than 201 + 75 (previously I also had 201+75 in my database), so looks like there was an extra one that they had missed, making the total 277 (but still the lowest mintage legal tender Australian 50c). And thanks for waiting till I had the set before posing your question!

I ended up getting the three coin sets for the last three, one from the Ukraine and two from Poland, supporting Peter's information that most of the coins in the last three did indeed go into Europe with perhaps Germany as the distribution point. Quite some time ago I also picked up the ox in a slab from the USA (as longer term members may remember this is the only slab that I have not ripped open) from a broken up set, but this may have originated from Europe as well - I guess we will never know for sure, but it doesn't negate Peter's information.

@Mr T, Perth Mint commenced Lunar Series II in 2008, while Series I had not yet covered all the 12 lunar animals. From what I can tell (all hearsay), PM originally was not going to make the last three coins from series I but faced opposition from collectors wanting to complete sets, so they made the last three all in the one year. With respect to the 1/2oz coins, there were no bullion issues at all for these last three years of Series I (and given PM issues mintage figures for bullion and numismatic coins separately) if you only found the bullion mintage figures as seen here http://www.perthmint.com.au//docume...d_221112.pdf you would indeed believe that there were no 1/2oz issues in the last three years.

If you ignore all the precious metal issues, the lowest mintage legal tender Australian 50c is the 1969 specimen issue of 2,000 produced for Nuphil for the Yarralumla PNC (Nu-27). 1,330 went to Nuphil, of the remaining 770 some were sold via Mint Shop at face value, with the remainder given out through change at the Mint Shop till. After that, it was the proof sets of '71, '73 and '72 respectively. Then proof sets of '74, '69, '06 and '70 till you come to the first circulation issue which is the 2001 100 yrs of Federation Tasmania CoA issue at a mintage of 15,634.

Including precious metal issues, by my database (which may not be accurate) there are seventy (yes 70) legal tender Australian 50c with mintage figures less than 10,000.

Good stuff Steve!

All you need do now is save up for those gold coins that you are missing (!) - especially this years Acacia gold 50cents - which can only be obtained by purchasing the 3 coin set from Oz, Canada and U.K. @ 10K$

Yes, definitely a very significant number of those series 1 Lunar coins went to German dealers and probably onwards in Europe from there.

By the way, I am still looking for that 1974 Nuphil Proof set of PNCs!

Cheers
