My american silver eagles all changed a little with their color. Any coin I believe will tone if they not inside of an air-tite holder.

I'm curious about the ASE's originally from the mint in OGP. Should they have toning?

I believe it is a function of environment and storage. Keep them (or any coins) in a dry, cool environment and there's a great chance they'll tone very little if at all. I have some bullion ASE's in my collection from back in the 80's and 90's that look brand new (only in my possession for the past couple years), and all the ones I have in OGP that I bought directly from the mint since the mid-90's are pristine still.

I live in a relatively dry climate and I keep my silver in a safe with a dehumidification system that consists of a wire basket full of those little desiccant packs you get in shoe and electronics boxes. So that certainly doesn't hurt.

That said, I've seen some gorgeous toning on ASE's and I love it. I'm a little biased anyway towards this particular coin, so in my opinion, a little toning here and there makes for an interesting set with more eye appeal, unless you are going for an absolutely pristine set.

. I have 5 ASE collections. All the early ASEs, whether in airtites, OGP, or commercial holders, have toned a bit. My 86 - 93 Proofs, in the OGP! have toning around the edges. Believe it or not, the business strike (?) ASEs I placed in "Cointains" have faired the best.

I use silicon packs in the storage boxes and it helps as long as you keep changing the packs. I recently placed some in Littleton albums, for what I've assembled for my sons, they seem to tone more quickly.

I have a 1986 ASE (slabbed of course) in my 7070 and it does not show any toning.

I agree with the previous postings...it's about the environment in which the coins are kept.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. Another question slightly off topic but does anyone of a box(s)specially made to hold an entire collection of ASE's that are still in their OGP? I looked on the Mints website and didn't see anything there.

OGP is small boxes, so I don't know that anyone does anything store those.

As the other have said, it really depends on how they are stored. Also, since they are pure silver vs 90% for things like Morgans, they tend to react more. It takes less exposure to say sulfur gas to cause toning on an ASE than it would your Peace dollars. I have an 86 that is solid light purple on the obverse and blaze on the reverse.I have no clue what caused it, but it is gorgeous. So I am one of the people that has absolutely no problem with toning.

I, personally, prefer the OGP "look" & toning on these ASE's is not cool.

if you don't have your coins encapsulated probably you will get some toning with the years, if you touch your coins with your fingers you will have toning from the oil of your skin too... some times encapsulated coins get toning too for different temperatures... that's what I seen in some of my coins...

OK< here is my 86. You can kind of see the purple coloring on the obverse. Really wish I could figure how to get these colors to show in pics.

My 1986 has a very light brown toning starting along the right side of the obverse.

My 1998 that I picked up from a coworker before he moved last fall has some insane blue-green toning that changes quickly rather than blending into the other colors of brown and black.

My overstruck Peace dollar pocket piece had started to tone after a year to a golden brown color but in the last 2 or 3 months has evolved into a deep purple hue around some the edge lettering (it is hard to capture the coloring and take a good picture of a once proof coin)
