Hard to imagine that level of damage happened in a mint bag ... I would have to put this coin in an "UNC detail, damaged" grade. Wouldn't pay more than VF/XF type money for it.

Looks like it was the top coin in a bag that took a stagecoach trip from San Fransisco to the east coast.

I don't see why it went so high either, maybe someone is seeing a pick up point for a good VAM, I don't see anything but, maybe a clash mark in the area of the "E" reverse, that could explain the pricing.

Some had a grudge against that coin or back in 1878 someone needed an anvil, didn't have one, and used the reverse of that coin as such as they pounded on something on top of it.
Sort of like those early 1800's coins with square holes in the as nails were square back then vs being drilled with a round bit.

I have bought from this seller before and all the coins looked great in the pics but were covered in hairlines when I received them, never buy from him again.
