There has been a plague of ordinary 33's listed as "overdate" or "possible overdate" the last few Months,i don't know what has caused it as I've been on ebay Oz. for 13 years and have never seen it before.

Well, the three looked pointy in the photo, and I've bought from this guy before, so it sould be OK. I'll post with a story when is arrives, either way. E-bay is kind of a lottery, It's half the fun, I've got some coins that didn't look anywhere as nice in the photos, than that they actually were, but others that are shabby and ordinary. I just try not to spend too much money.

Research has shown several different dies (as many as 7) were produced to strike the overdate coins. This explains why there are different varieties.

How much did you pay for that example? I have a couple for sale, this is an example of the clearest variety of the overdate: http://www.ebay.com/itm/230955454945?ru=http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html%3F_sacat=0&_from=R40&_nkw=230955454945&_rdc=1

Even my crappy camera can clearly pick that one up. The other two I have for sale arent as clear but are definite overdates. I think one is around the $10 mark.

enworb, are there any other features to tell them apart, or is it a simple case of "if you can't see it, then it's not an overdate"?

If you cant see it then its not an overdate. Have a read of this article: http://naa-online.com/pdfjournal/Vo...icle%202.pdf

It will take you half an hour or so to read and let it fully sink in but it is well worth it. It explains how the overdate dies were probably produced as well as showing examples of the varieties and exact mintage numbers. The overdate is really not all that scarce. One in 10 or so 1933 pennies I think.

with enworb.

If you can't see the over-date in the images, assume that it is not an over-date, regardless of description.

Too many sellers getting this wrong at the moment.

Thats the general rule but some sneaky sellers will show an overdate in the description yet send you a normal.
