The Reverse always shows well in the 03's with little wear(they always seem to be a bit concave) and the Obverse always shows poor definition in the beard (they always seem to be a bit convex).

For me,.. this one would be hard to call a 50..I'd have to go a bit lower.

By all means DEVLEC please post your 03 right here if you wish. I'd like to see it. I have had the 03 pictured for years and can't decide if it's EF or AU.

Hi wireman,

Very nice looking coin with the blue colour hilites... :)

Obverse has a bit too much wear in my opinon to get AU...

Beard as noted, but especially the worn down top of ear...

Take care, and Have a Great Weekend!

Here's another 03 with more detail in the beard,.. but all 5 cents of that series show weak detail in the beard... at least what I have do...

I've checked some others (03H, 04, 05 etc) All are lacking great detail in the beard, even in "nice grade"..

Hope that this helps a bit...

Please take note of the difference in the top of the ear in the 2 coins. The Reverse on yours is still beautiful..

Very nice looking 03 DEVLEC. That coin has incredible lustre. You have some very sweet coins that I have seen here on CCF. I knew mine wasn't uncirculated, I had purchased the coin in the early 80's as a EF. With all the talk that grading has soften in recent years I thought it may have moved up to possible a AU50. First thing I noticed was the ears. Your 03 looks like it probably is a MS64 with strong lustre and eye appeal. Always enjoy seeing exceptional nice coins and thanks for sharing.

@doubleeagle...Asyn MS63... I think I'd rather have the ICCS EF40.

Thanks wireman...I also bought mine in the 80's.

Grades then were as you said lacking in numerical values. Some that I bought were graded 'choice unc's' but were graded in the 90's as 'AU 55'. But on the flip side many others were also graded as MS 64 and MS 65.

A 5 cents silver under a 4x loop would now give you a small cent as the ~ final grading size... "if going by the book" back then. I then used.. and still use a 7x loop as my standard viewer.

We have now blown these little 5c pieces up to the size of small plates and every minute touch is now gigantic. If you hold that little 5c piece in your hand with a 4x loop,...there's not very much to see.

I'm experimenting with different lighting to get a sharp pic. The 'sun pic' here makes a blazing white coin too bright in my opinion. A darkish coin does well in the sun pic but I will try a shade pic to take some of the brilliant glare out of some recent pics. Most of my 5 cent silvers have some toning and the sun basically washes it all out.

bosox showed us how to get the best pics possible...I'm still trying...

Hey you guys and gals....A little more respect for the "advanced Asyn" grading system please...

You must remember that their # scale goes up to a high of 80 or 85,..and their "chief grader" is in his 90's,..so let's wish him many more years of great health and vision...
