Not a chance I could fail to touch them. They'd be all "Raven" to my Poe.

Our coin club recently purchased a few sealed proof sets in late 50's/early 60's to give out as prizes. I would expect that the winners of these sets would open them. They have been sealed for 50 years. It is time to open them.

Yes, that's it, buy them and open them immediately! In fact I encourage everyone to buy as many proof sets as they can and open them all!

Eventually I'll have the only unopened proof sets left and I'll be rich!

Rich I tell ya!

Hahahahah!

NJ Bob... I was serious - I have the original mint packaging - unsealed envelopes from the early 50's to about 64. I bought a package in a lot on ebay in about 2001 - and could repack anything in them and sell them on ebay as unopened sets. The unopened hype is over rated.

Doug58s - very interesting.

I am thinking the "unopened" proof sets is a step or two behind "unsearched _______" (fill in the blank with bags of coins or original bank rolls.

Going to pass on this one.

This sounds like a great set to me. Our local dealers seem to really rack up pricing on "unopened" sets here, except for one. I've only bought them locally as I really don't know what to "trust" on ebay anymore. Here I bought '58 to '64 Unopened for $265. I know that's more than what I've seen on ebay, but I also KNOW who they came from and what this man has been selling to my local coin store as I've seen him bring in boxes from time to time. They are all still unopened by the way here at the house.

This is an old dilemma that really doesn't have a right or wrong answer IMHO. If you're into coin investing, you have to look at purchases and preservation as a business. If you're a collector and you want to enjoy the thrill of owning and looking at your coins, you break the seal. The problem becomes when you mix coin investing and coin collecting...

I don't really see a point in paying more for something that is unopened. How can you enjoy the look of the coins if you can't see them?

If you are getting them to collect the coins then get into them and bring out their beauty. IF you want them to save some money the maybe leave them as they are. Personally I would be cracking them open!

Crack them open.
Crack them o-pen.

And then post pics so we can all drool over them.

Have to agree with Bama here. You have to answer the question are you a collector or an investor. Good luck with what ever you decide.

I bought a bunch of sealed envelope 1962-64 proof sets many years ago because the price was just about the price of the silver in them. They were original Mint envelopes in great condition.

I decided to do an experiment and steamed open one of the 64's, took a peek at the coins (nice coins)and then just resealed the envelope. Very easy and impossible to tell it was opened.

Buy them for the coins and do not pay a premium because they are "unopened"

As others have said an ebay trick is to open the envelope, remove the set and replace with cheap 70's and 80's coins of the same weight. I would open envelopes and verify correct coins are inside. I would not cut open the mylar packing though.
