I would shoot off an email such as:

"By the way _____, when you are finished goggling over my 1817 Large Cent, a quick return would be appreciated as I have recently acquired a nice album for my collection - and it's space is feeling quite empty! Thanks, _____"

Hi Okie-colin
I noticed Ira Meltzer has an 1817 AU N-16 listed in his ad in the May 21 Coin World. I met him last weekend at a coin show in Auburn Mass. He said he travels a lot and so he might be going to the Nashua, NH show this weekend. If you are interested, I could check it out for you.

The Coin World ad says 1300. Which seems like a lot to me, but I have not seen the coin. He did have some large cents with him, but since I was not looking for large cents last weekend, they were invisible to me. However, he did have some exceptionally nice and conservatively graded bust quarters and he was willing to negotiate some. I have been thinking of calling him today to see if he will be in Nashua, because I hesitated last weekend and after looking around I decided that I want to get a 1825/4 bust quarter he has.

Wow! That is out of my price range. I am looking for XF to VF for my Dansco 7070. Thanks anyway.

Sorry to hear about your problem. There appears to be a rash of coin thefts by close friends/acquantices of late...

Keep think positive

The sad thing about this is that you will think twice about taking anyone into the vault to show your coins. It is unfortunate this happened but what good are coins if they are just locked up for noone to enjoy?

Actually Meltzer has an 1817 AU N-16 (Newcomb-16) which is a 15 star obverse, see for example

You're looking for 13 stars, right? I will look at the show in Nashua on Sunday. Is the Newcomb number important? Here is a listing of the Newcomb varieties (with some *stale* auction results):

What sort of price is acceptable?

For one thing I have accounts in several banks and none of them have cameras in the private rooms for safe deposit box dealings. They are everywhere but not in those rooms where you inspect your personal items in the boxes. This would be an infringement of your privacy. As to the missing coin. I suggest you forget it and forget the person you showed it to. You can not prove he took the coin and the loss should be a very expensive lesson about showing off valuable items to anyone, including relative, neighbors, friends, coworkers, etc. Letting people know what you have in the way of coins regardless of their honesty is dangerous. People just can not keep their mouths shut and worse yet they can not get the story straight anyway. If you show someone a coin worth $100 by the time they've retold that to many, many people you would now have a $100,000 coin.
Each person adds more on to stories to make them sound better and the next thing is someone is breaking into your house for the million dollar coin. Consider the loss of such people a gift.

Well folks I have just concluded a pretty good buy on ebay for a 1817 - 13 Star LCent. It isn't as good a coin as the one that was swiped, but I am satisfied. It is a VF-20 Brown with what looks like just a tiny hint of porosity in one area of the obverse and no other problems. I don't think I am going to become jaded as a result of this experience, but I find myself starting to feel some anger. I won't ever have anything to do with this pathetic individual again. His loss is much larger than mine in my opinion. He has a large horde of old silver coins that he brags that he swiped when he was a youth working in a summer job at the coin rolling operation of a local bank. No one supervised him in the basement of the bank and he would just take out of the loose change any 90% silver that he wanted. It was sporadic enough that it never threw the total count off by enough to draw attention. How much more of a clue did I need? Man am I dumb. I consider this episode finished. He never replied to my email asking him if he ever found a large cent for his collection so I am sure he knows that I am aware of what he did. To reach the age where you are retired from a good job, eligible for social security and still be a petty thief is just pathetic! Thanks for all the replies!

Congrats on your new 1817!
Reading about your new 1817 made me get out my large cents and rediscover how cool they are. I think its time to find my old copy of Penny Whimsy and read it again this weekend.

Wow, just wow. What's worse is he doesn't share this as a bad mistake of his past. He brags about it? You know, I had a slight hint of question in my mind as to whether or not he actually did it. Now I have no doubt.

I'm really sorry about this experience. Was that particular coin your most favored?

My favorites in the coppers are the draped bust half and large cent. I guess I am fortunate he took this one. I had four coronet type large cents in the box and I think he ignorantly thought they were duplicates rather than different types and that I wouldn't miss it. The 1817 was one of the first old coppers that I acquired and I had looked forward to placing it in the Dansco 7070. I paid around $35 for it around six years ago and it was XF and still had some mint luster. It would cost in excess of $200 to get a similar one today. When I get the replacement back in the album I am going to photograph it and post the pictures of the entire complete 7070 Type Set. It has been a great undertaking of time and money to acquire all these coins.

Glad to hear you confronted him about this issue. I would hate to see this guy running off thinking no one even noticed. Glad to hear your 7070 is complete. I have yet to start one.
