If its too good to be real, then it probably isn't. I'm by no means an expert on the series, but it looks odd. Everything looks right, but the coloring is way off. Please test this coin with a magnet. Also, what is the weight of it? You will also want to measure the coin.

Well, I am pretty sure that is fake. For a Trade to be worth only melt it would have to be either an AG or worse coin, or a fake. Money aside.

The MM is way too small IMO as mentioned. The arrowheads are wrong. The leaves on the olive branch above Fine are wrong.

On the obverse the details above/in front of her feet do not look right nor does her hand.

I could be way off, but I don't think so.

it weighed 27 grams at the jewelry store. Since I was not sure if it was silver and was butt ugly I let them polish it with a cloth. Here is how it looks now. Though it could be fake, I lean towards genuine mostly because I see more evidence to support it being genuine than counterfeit. Assuming it is genuine, $18.50 is a bargain with something comparable possibly worth $120-130. Unfortunately, it may have been worth slightly more before the polishing. It appears to be recovering from a prior cleaning which is likely why it was toned somewhat unattractively.

I knew polishing it with that cloth was not the ideal thing to do but that color it was before made me wonder if was even silver! The pics here are not very good. The coin is not that shiny. The flash on the camera makes it look worse than it is. Thanks for your reply.

I can't believe a professional jewelry store that deals with coins clean coins just like that. Did they suggest it or came up with the idea? there are better ways to determine if the metal is silver than to polish it and see if it looks like silver.

the coin was in a lot of silver dollars and halves. Bought for 18,5 times face. Some of the coins I got from the same guy I sold to my local coin store for twice what I paid for junk. I will likely do the same with these coins. The Trade dollar is not as shiny as my bad pics make it look. It has some scratches and dings in it and the rims are a bit rough. The coin did not look like silver initially so I was a bit unsure about it. I am going to find out today if it is real or not and how much it is worth. The local guy used to grade at PCGS so he should know. Jerry

Every authentic Trade dollar is worth at least twice melt, unless completely unrecognizable, holed or otherwise badly abused.
If it is indeed authentic, that's a great buy, otherwise, that's a lesson learned :).

They did a number on that with polishing it. I almost prefer to odd coloration of the original surfaces to the polished look. I am still on the fence for authenticity, but if authentic, it lost a lot of value. It may very well have been a ground find while metal detecting, possibly sitting next to something iron that left the rust stains. Nothing screams fake to me.

It might be possible to make it more market acceptable by dipping it...strip off all the toning and make it a dull white. Normally, that's a BIG no-no; but this coin is already in disaster mode and a dip might help it.

the coin shop owner thought it was either in the ground or possibly in a fire. The rims are pretty banged up as well so he thought it might have been taken out of a belt buckle. He weighed it at 27 grams so he was 80% sure it was real but in its banged up state he could not be for certain.
