Come on Jbuck you know they cant think that far ahead. In fairness though changing these from circulated coins to NIFC gives them more leeway with what to do and probably would have required further clarification of action once the dollar coin was considered failed

Quote: did they just forget Carter was president (okay, sometimes this might actually be true)? Actually, in the last 5 years, I kinda miss him!

Quote: However, I hate the idea of the program getting there and having this gap. We go Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, Ford, Reagan (35, 36, 37, 38, 40) and that's just going to look bad. Which is why the mint is currently only listing through Ford. No gap, and honors each in the order in which they served. Sure I would like to see a Reagan dollar, but if you slip in a living Carter, how do you leave out a living Bush, Clinton, Bush, Obama..... If they try and slip in a change to allow Carter, you are definitely going to see amendments added to honor the other living Presidents as well.

Why not? They are our US Presidents, after all. It is not an easy job. Look, we messed up putting Lincoln on the cent. This started what we have today, dead presidents on coins with Liberty relegated to a crowded group of legends (expect, ironically, on the Presidential dollar series). If we are going to put presidents on coins, we need to put all of them on coins, living or dead. Yes, I am ...Which I blame on a lack of sleep. I wanted to watch one hockey game last night and ended up seeing two.

The only thing I could see was if Obama was still in office leaving him off, but Id be fine if they went through every former president being a collector coin only now. Itd be a little strange though if they took that last step and added a current president to the series

Obama's term will have ended before his coin would come up, so nothing to worry about there.

It's bad enough we have dead presidents defacing our money, let's not encourage putting live ones there too.
Coins and currency should reflect national points of pride, accomplishment and hopes, the depictions of Liberty are the ultimate display of all three of these ideals.

The majority of Americans do not correlate the presidential number with the mintage year so order of mintage will not matter. How often do you hear a non-collector say "Oh boy! I found a 2007P Washington Dollar!" No...it's a George Washington Dollar. In fact, I bet most people would not know where to find the date anyway. Skipping Carter and going to Reagan is not an issue in the long run. 100 years from now, if someone were to ask, "How come Reagan was minted in 2016 but Carter had to wait until 2019?" Then the inquirer gets the sudden realization that these people were living at the time this series was minted. It humanizes them and makes history seem more relatable.
Since mintage dates do not seem to matter much, I feel the series can be extended indefinitely but of course slowed since presidents do not tend to pass away four per year. I am fully against placing a living former president on a coin. I always thought of coins memorializing people rather than celebrating their current lives.

Thats generally how I see it as well though with this series I dont see it as a memorial or celebration of their life just their presidency. Because of that I wouldnt have an issue with it when their presidency ended since nothing they do afterwards can take away the fact they were a president.

Quote: So I sure hope no bill is ever introduced to allow live people on our coins. They don't need such a bill, it is already legal to depict living people on the coinage. It isn't legal to have them on the currency. This is why the State Quarter bill, the ATB Quarter bill, and the President dollar bill specifically stated that living persons could not appear on those coins, because otherwise they COULD have appeared.
