Hate to be a naysayer but I think we may be looking at a form of Die Deterioration. Notice that every "doubling" is towards the rim. A true doubled die would have the secondary image all in the same direction.

Class 2 (distorted hub doubling) has all doubling either toward the rim or toward the center.

Yeah--that's probably it. You don't see notched serifs with Die Deterioration.

The "S" on this coin appears to have "notching" yet it was declared to be Die Deterioration.

The original coin posted in this thread is definitely a doubled die, and has been correctly identified as to classification - it is a class 2, distorted hub doubled die. On a scale of one to five for strength, I would give this one a three, meaning it is on the low-end of being a major doubled die.

The argued coin posted later by DrDon is Machine Doubling. There are no splits, the "doubling" has no relief. The "doubling" is the result of die chatter - the die bounced while the coin was being minted.

DrDon - your confusion over direction on true doubled dies may stem from you possibly having been told that on a true hub doubled die the doubling will be on one side or the other of affected letters, and not both sides. If it is on both sides, then the diagnosis is almost always Die Deterioration Doubling and is never a doubled die.

I had never encountered this form of doubled die before. When someone mentioned it I did the research leading to my posting the link that confirmed it was indeed a doubled die.

1962-5-Cent-DDR?

The twe green "arrows" are pointing to what looked to me as "splitting". The two images of the "S" are separate and raised. The rest of the coin supported the determination of Die Deterioration.
