I'd go with F15, as the liberty is there but not quite strong. Also a couple of nicks on the face/hair. Its been my experience that this would be sold as VF on ebay. I'd be happy with it is I bought it as a fine, but not so happy if was sold as VF. So maybe a stong fine and weak VF.

to me the hair detail and LIBERTY are a little stronger than F12, I say it could make a VF20 grade. the issue is that it looks like it was cleaned which knocks down the value somewhat. I normally price cleaned coins at 30% of retail. its just me as I try to not purchase them unless its a rare coin or variety.

to the forum...great knowledge can be found here

I was thinking that at first look too because of the "I', F-15.

This coin is a F-12, maybe an F-15 if whatever is going on with LIBERTY is damage and not wear, tough to say.

I find the grading of Liberty nickels to be the most absurd out of any series out there. Nobody seams to follow the guidelines, not even the TPGs. Not to call anybody out, but since about half the posters in this thread said they think it was a VF, I ask, based on what? It clearly misses VF if you go by photograde pictures. It misses pretty much every characteristic for a VF in the official ANA guidebook. It also misses VF if you go by simple RedBook, or other, standards. That being said, most ebay sellers will call this a VF. I have also seen TPGs call this a VF, though I think this may get a details holder. That is what I find absurd, all together, the collecting public seams to have created their own standards for Liberty nickels in the face of any official standards.

Your opinion, my opinion. I won't try and take yours away if you won't try and take mine.

No, feel free to do so. Seriously. I really do want to know why people think this is a VF. I am just not on thr same page with most sellers when it comes to this series and I'd love to know why.

I have collected, bought, sold, and studied this series extensively. I have literature on these coins and I have observed many "official" grading guidelines for this coin. It's not a VF anywhere...except in many other people's opinion. I just want to know why.

For me, it's the detail in the hair above the ear which pushes it (just barely) into VF20. I agree there are some issues with LIBERTY, but the overall effect is just barely VF20.

I agree with hesgut. One of the reasons I became interested in the LHN series is that the grading seemed like it would be more objective, particularly since the letters in liberty are relatively large and subject to wear. The "I" is week in this photo. I'd want to have a VF to have a stronger "I". I see the point about the hair over the ear, and that does look more in the VF range, but I think with this seres the liberty does need to be stronger to fully be VF.

Liberty is there, also look at the eyes, ear, and lips not to mention the hair. Now go look at an F12 example at PCGS.

Raymo: I see your point regrading the eyes, lips and hair, much better than the photograde f12. Maybe a better photo is needed of this coin.

Unfortunately, this the best pic I was able to get with my cell phone. It is a pretty good representation of what the coin looks like in hand. The "I" isn't very strong, but the hair lines are very strong.

I appreciate all the feedback and getting the opinion of people who are more experienced at this then I am.
