I would think VF30 since these typically suffer from a weak strike. Love the terminal die state reverse die!

After they went to the gold border labels they did us a red border label for problem coins BRIEFLY, but then quietly did away with the red labels and started putting problem coins in the gold bordered slabs as well. And not marking them as problem coins. Anything in a gold border PCI slab should be examined VERY carefully.

I'm going to say its a strong VF-35, might make EF-40. It looks like it may have had an old cleaning.

VF-40 and I am leaning towards a details grade because it might have been cleaned at some point.

Looks like I'm on the high end in grading this coin. Can my eyes be that bad?

Okay, the "cleaning/conserving" is possible, even probable, as is the case with most early coins. It's almost always easier to discern problematic cleaning with coin-in-hand than with pics. Not seeing any sign of harsh cleaning in the pic, I made the assumption that it had probably been cleaned at some time, during the past 207 years but did not take off points.

The fairly extensive die breaks on this coin suggest to me that the dies were on their "last legs" when this coin was struck. These early coins are often unevenly struck, and comparing this subject coin to others that are now on ebay, it's easy to see different areas that were weakly struck. On this coin the bust cleavage is particularly strong and better than a few, slabbed AU's! I tend to grade these early coins according to the strongest struck areas, then deduct points in my mind's eye for things like abrasive cleaning, dings, discoloration, etc. I don't "see" any major issues with this coin, AND I love that it's a very late die state, cracks and all.

I'm curious as to what factors, beyond suspected cleaning, are leading others to grade this coin below XF ... VG, even ?

I'd say VF-35 detail for the obverse. The reverse weakness may be partly due to poor strike from the badly fractured die. There don't appear to be any hairlines from abrasive cleaning but the uniform gray color could be the result of dipping or other light cleaning.
Overall I'd net-grade it as VF-30. Anybody know the Overton variety?

Most of you Guys are pretty close, it was in a gold label EF-40 slab. I do tend to agree with the grade but like many of you said it's hard to tell a cleaning without the coin in hand. This one does show signs of cleaning, more so on the obverse. It also has a heavy patch of hairlines in front of Liberty's face that only show when tipped at the right angle. I had her on ebay with an accurate description about 6 months ago for 750.00 but no takers, I paid 650.00 for it about 10 years ago so by the time the fees and post office are paid 750.00 was a break even number for me.
Thanks for the comments, Dave
