I'll get some closeups. It's in a Capital Plastics set, so I'll remove it and see what I can do.

I don't like it either. From pictures of the 4 die pairs, the horizontal part of the D is roughly parallel to the horizontal portion of the E and looks way off. The interior of the mint mark should be triangular while this one sort of looks like an oval.

I had a couple dealers at a recent coin show look at it in person and they said it was the real deal. I guess the only way to know is to send it off to a TPG company.

Soak it in acetone and see if the D comes off.

I would have to agree with everyone else assess, the rotation of the MM is way off.

Unfortunately I agree with the others as well. Mint mark doesn't match up at all, it's quite off. I'd also agree with glued, & to try acetone, you can actually see where the D has shifted over the years. In all honesty not trying to sound like a bummer but I wouldn't spend the money to send it in, it's quite off, and you can see the "path" the D's traveled, I don't know how a dealer could miss it.

Well, darn. I appreciate everyone letting me know. Better than getting told by a TPG company. I guess I'll have to buy a lowball '16-D just to complete the set.

Interesting and informative thread, although an unhappy ending for Wheatback.
