Welcome.. enjoy the hobby...have fun with it...
Collect what interest you... decide on how you want your collection to look like.. and don't worry what your wife thinks...
Two years ago I was kinda looking to slow my pace and do something for my newborn... I thought coins would be a neat thing.. so I started accumulating (wouldn't even call it collecting as I was buying almost anything and everything with little direction)..
Now my wife loves that she knows where I am.. and what I'm doing.. and funny thing is.. she now knows some common errors and key dates. It will rub off.. and everyone will enjoy it!

I started doing that too. Found a few, figured it would be easy - 50 states, 50 quarters. How hard could that be? Oops.

50 States, 100 quarters. My wife has an album and is collecting both mint marks. She started in the spring and has 80% of them. Almost all from finds in quarter rolls from the bank. And that is difficult when you live in Canada. Once you are at 80% though, most of the finds are repeats.
Welcome freemike. Start slowly and take some time to figure out where you want to go wtih this. Do you want to be a"hoarder" or a "collector"?

mike pic one denomination or a few and collect for varieties or specimens ,and my wife refuses to go up with me to any counter that I will be receiving any type of change..

Thanks guys think I might try for a nickel set to start. Do I just wanna look for non circulated or can a circulated set be worth going after and is it better to shop of the internet or are coin shop around the same pricing

@ punman There's also DC and the Territorial Possessions. And then you get one with an S mint mark... And lest I forget, welcome freemike; I'm not attempting to hijack your thread. But like Mrs. punman's search for State Quarters, it's the hunt that's the fun part. Just remember though - once you start you can never stop. |

Hang on to all coins until you define your goals. Spend/sell the excess to obtain one or two
nice examples. The choice will be yours.

no prob lyradnoj I have actually half-way collected the state coins for a while but I would always lose them. All I have now is vermont, west virgina and nevada. Thanks for the greetings everyone.

I started collecting nickels when I was a kid. I picked the best circulated ones I could find in change. Then each year I would try to find the new year in change while relatively unworn. There were older years that I could not find in change. Those I had to buy. At that point you have to decide if you want to pay circulated (like F or EF prices) or mint (MS60 and so on). It will depend on your budget at that point. I have bought a few coins from dealers but have started using ebay six months ago and like that but more experienced collectors can tell you the pros and cons of on-line vs. the human touch. I started collecting nickels back in the mid-50's and soon found that once started I couldn't give up the habit... here a nickel, there a nickel, here another one and on and on it went. Then, I wish I had started thinking but didn't, so I added pennies to my pursuits. Then, guess... you're right, along came a passion to get at the dimes and that was soon followed by a fixation to gather quarters. I became obsessed with amassing coins upon coins upon coins. Now, I have so darn many coins I'm thinking of starting a reality TV show... The Canadian Coin Hoarder. Gawd only knows what troubles that will bring. Oh yeah... have fun.  |

Just went to bank and bought my first rolls of change 12 bucks in nickels prob. 12 before 82 mostly 70's got a 65 though thats new for me.

I started back in the 50`s with my paper route and a customer would go through my change. So I figured there must have be some logic there, so I started collecting.
I moved closer to BC and got an awful lot of Canadian coins that people here didnt save and have been it ever since.
