The reverse of this attractive toner is a solid gem. The obverse is choice. MS64 sounds correct for the overall grade.

VAM-2. The hefty survival rate of this issue belies its' low mintage; it's not intuitive that a coin with only 296,000 minted would be worth a little over $500 in MS64. But there it is.
Eye appeal is utterly off the charts. This one grabs me by the throat, and I'd be reduced to giggles were I able to add it to my collection. The cheek doesn't quite allow me to go 65 on it, but if PCGS were to call it that I wouldn't be handing out pitchforks.
MS64+ for extraordinary eye appeal. If this one goes in your cases, you need to get top-of-the-market money for it.

@ Dave and Dave; I agree its a VAM-2. The Reverse is spot on, all the way to the die crack. For all, a non-toned example can be seen here; http://www.vamworld.com/1881-CC+VAM-2@ mkman123 - I don't buy on ebay. I buy from legitimate sources that I have been dealing with for over 2 decades, or take a chance at organizations and agencies that are willing to work with me on prices. I am a huge fan of Morgan dollars. One day I was sorting through the safe and my daughter and her fiance come in and my daughter asked "So, Dad, is there anything you buy that you don't sell ? " I gave her one of those "of course" looks, and handed her a NGC box of 64 and 65 PL Morgans, and another of Toned 64, 65 and 66 beauties. She said WOW, where'd you get these, and I said through many places and many years. And there are more of these than I am willing to pull out. She says, well, that answers my question ! This one I will eventually send in and get graded and attributed. I am an even bigger fan of the Carson City Morgans, and while I can I am diving all in to buy one of each at the highest level my wallet can afford. I do sell the lower graded coins and move up slowly in the Morgan dollar market and it is paying off. I'm a collector, investor and businessman all wrapped into one. A Toned Morgan dollar is hard to beat, and thats why I collect them. = )

Even if you beat the grade - and they're available up to MS68 - you'll have a hard time beating the look. An amazing coin.

@ dave; This is probably going to be a keeper. I like toned Morgan dollars alot, and I personally would prefer a nice toned example over the plain jane silver edition. To me, it seems to add that rustic quality of old age. This 1881-CC is a close #2/3/4 to my favorite Morgan. Its a combination of appeal, rarity and a CC Dollar. Thats hard to beat. This is me favorite so far. Its a NGC MS66 or 67 - I forget which. Looks like some one created it via a paint brush. http://www.collector-corner.com/wp-...1a_w2560.jpg

I'm with you on toned Morgans. Blast white is alright but tone stands alone.

Quote: I'm with you on toned Morgans. Blast white is alright but tone stands alone. Me too... I like, and will choose original toners over a blast white coin every day of the week... And I also like Morgan's more than any other coins, and also especially CC's. The only thing better than a toned CC is a DMPL toned CC . I have a stunning DMPL ANACS '83CC toner and its definitely one of my favorite coins I own.. I could never get sick of looking at it! Not as rare of a date as yours but a beauty none the less..

Since the picture is magnified, I think you have a good shot at a 65.
