I have a '34 like the bearcats and it is soft in pluribus too. However, this coin seems off to me. It would be considered a small date variety but the date seems a little off and the strike on the reverse seems strange. The dentils don't compare to my coin. I agree that it should be weighed.

My scale isn't very accurate -- it only reads to the tenth gram. It shows 13.5 grams.

I added another pic of the reverse. The surfaces look natural to me. It would be very odd coin to fake. The investment would far exceed the return ...

Well that's right on the money...so maybe it's just the photo or a poor strike.

Although I believe yours is good. Many have been faked. VF35 on your small date, small letter.

I'm quite confident this coin is genuine.

No offence intended....simply thought the denticles on the reverse looked funky.

This coin is genuine. It is very common on Capped Bust Halves to be weak in that spot. It is just opposite of the lower breast area which required a lot of metal to flow into the dies on both sides during striking. Sometimes the conditions were not right during striking to fill the voids completely. Variables such as striking pressure, planchet thickness, die spacing etc. cause these variations. Personally it doesn't bother me much. It's part of the personality of these early coins.

Your 1834 small date small letters is in VF condition, the detail is not strong enough for XF. still a nice example. This one has a better strike.

The coin is nice, but something does look off a bit. Almost like the hair detail was professionally re-engraved....though I am probably wrong there. Anyhow, nice coin.

I'm comfortable with it. The dies are old - note the drawing of the stars - but the obverse master was redesigned for 1834 to offer more head detail. Therefore, I'd expect a well-struck example to show high levels of hair detail by comparison to previous issues.
